Fluid Pressure - Power Steering Pump, Check (Petrol Engines) Notice: If power steering malfunctions, it is often not immediately possible to tell if steering gear or power steering pump is faulty. Use Oil Pressure Gauge KM-354-B to check oil pressure.
Install, Connect Connect Fluid Pressure Gauge KM-354-B to pressure line with KM-354-3 (1) and to power steering pump delivery connection (2). |
|
Remove, Disconnect For Z 22 SE: Remove pressure line (3) from pressure line pipe (4). Attach Fluid Pressure Gauge KM-354-B (1) with both Adapters KM-354-3 (2).
Important! Fluid escapes - place collecting basin underneath. Top up fluid before pressure test. |

Inspect Start engine. In steering mid-position and with shut-off valve open, the pressure gauge indicates a pressure (at operating temperature) of approx. 2 to 5 bar. On turning steering wheel to the left or right, the pressure increases and reaches its maximum value just before the respective end stop - see "Technical Data". A slight difference in pressure between the left and right end stop has no significance.
Important! Never hold steering gear at full lock for longer than 10 seconds.
Measure Read off exact maximum pressure with measurement gauge shut-off valve open (KM-354-B) and with steering wheel turned to right or left stop. Then close shut-off valve, steering in mid-position, and read off maximum pressure.
Important! When shut-off valve is closed, pump continues operating with maximum pressure. Close shut-off valve for short periods of time only, while reading off manometer simultaneously (10 seconds maximum). Perform three measurements. Average value indicates maximum pressure. If maximum pressure with shut-off valve closed is noticeably greater than at steering wheel stop: faulty steering gear hydraulics. If maximum pressure with shut-off valve closed is less than that given in Technical Data: faulty fluid pump.
Remove, Disconnect Remove Fluid Pressure Gauge KM-354-B and Adapter KM-354-3.
Install, Connect Attach pressure line with new seal rings to power steering pump - tightening torque for all petrol engines except Z 22 SE: 37.5 Nm / 28 lbf. ft. For Z 22 SE: Attach pressure line with new O-ring to pressure line pipe - tightening torque 28 Nm / 21 lbf. ft.
Inspect Charge and bleed hydraulic system - see operation "Hydraulic System, Charge and Bleed".
