Removing and installing high-pressure pump
  WARNING
Observe safety precautions when releasing fuel pressure in high-pressure section → Chapter
For reasons of safety when opening fuel system, remove fuse for fuel pump control unit -J538- from fuse holder. This prevents the fuel pump from being activated by driver door contact switch. Fuse assignment → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
  Note
t  The high-pressure pump must not be dismantled.
t  Note safety precautions before beginning work → Chapter.
t  Observe rules for cleanliness → Chapter.
Removing
–  Remove engine cover/air filter → Chapter.
–  Set engine to TDC.
   
–  Pull off connectors -1 and 2-.
  WARNING
The fuel line is under pressure.
Risk of injury to eyes and skin from fuel.
Wear eye protection and protective clothing to avoid eye injuries and skin contact. Before loosening hose connections, wrap a cloth around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully opening the connection point.

–  Open hose clip -1- and pull fuel hose off.
–  Unscrew fuel pipe -3-, at the same time counterhold connection -2-.

–  Unscrew bolts -arrows- and carefully pull out high-pressure pump.
  Note
Under certain circumstances, the plunger → Item may become stuck in the cylinder head.
Installing
–  Renew high-pressure pump O-ring and coat slightly with clean engine oil.
–  Check plunger → Item for damage and insert cylinder head.

–  Carefully position high-pressure pump on cylinder head and tighten bolts -arrows- hand-tight.
–  Screw on fuel pipes hand-tight.
  Note
Before installing fuel pipes, check torque of threaded connection.
–  Tighten all bolts and fuel pipes to required torque → Chapter.
–  Re-insert fuse for fuel pump control unit -J538- into fuse holder.
Further installation is performed in the reverse sequence.
