Brake Master Cylinder: Service and Repair
Replacement (Non ABS to 92)

CAUTION:  The Master Cylinder Must Be Replaced As A Unit.

REMOVAL

1. Place rags under master cylinder to protect paint work from fluid spillage. 
2. Disconnect brake pipes and undo master cylinder mounting nuts. Use 7 mm socket and extension rod. If car is equipped with hydraulic clutch:

Disconnect clutch hose from fluid reservoir. Secure hose in suitable position. Block clutch connection opening in fluid reservoir. Remove master
cylinder.

NOTE:  Before installing master cylinder: Check distance between end of servo pushrod and face of servo as illustrated. Dimension should be 2.5
mm (0.10 inches).  

INSTALL

1. Master cylinder Tighten nuts to max. 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).
2. Reconnect brake pipes. If car is equipped with hydraulic clutch: Reconnect clutch hose to reservoir.
3. Fill with genuine Volvo brake fluid.
4. Bleed braking system and clutch (as applicable).
5. Pressure-test braking system after bleeding. Operate brake pedal with a force equivalent to hard braking for 30 seconds and inspect master cylinder

for signs of fluid leakage.

NOTE:  Pedal travel must not exceed 55 mm (2.2 inches) when pedal is operated at least 3-4 times with engine stopped.
