When checking a flywheel, noise or rattling or serious damage to the surface of the clutch driven plate can determine in the first instance whether the
flywheel need be replaced.
The surface can be discolored by high temperatures and radial cracks may occur without any serious damage. If lateral cracks appear the flywheel must
be replaced.
The extent of the radial play between the primary and secondary masses of the flywheel varies depending on the engine version (gasoline, diesel).
The play in a used flywheel is always greater than a new flywheel, which is not a fault. The secondary mass moves more easily between the end points
than in a new flywheel which must not be considered a fault. The secondary mass also has axial/out-of-true play which is normal.
