Removal

  1. Remove the camshaft timing belt.
    For additional information, refer to Timing belt in this section.

  1. Detach the oil baffle.
    • Put down bearing caps nos. 2 and 4 in order with the bearing shells.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Slacken the nuts of bearing caps nos. 1, 3 and 5 a turn at a time.
    Remove the camshaft.
      NOTE:
      NOTE:Put the bearing caps and shells down in order.
    • Remove the camshaft and oil seal.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Keep them in order.
    Remove the valve tappets and shims.

  1. Move cylinders nos. 1 and 4 approximately to TDC position.
    • Turn the crankshaft until the slot in the injection pump timing pulley is at 12 o'clock.
    • Mark the position on the crankshaft.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Only carry out this procedure on cylinders nos. 1 and 4.
    Remove the valve springs.
    • Compress the valve spring and take out the valve collets.

  1. Remove the valve stem oil seals.

Installation

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Mask the collet grooves with adhesive tape during installation.
    Lubricate the valve stem oil seals with oil and install them.

  1. Install the valve springs.
    • Locate the valve spring and valve spring retainer in position.
    • Compress the valve spring and fit the valve collets.

  1. Set the second and third cylinders to approx. TDC and repeat removal steps 6. and 7. and steps 1. and 2. on these cylinders.
    • Turn the crankshaft through another 180 degrees until the slot in the injection pump timing pulley is at 3 o'clock.

  1. Lubricate the valve tappets and shims with oil and install them.

  1. Turn the crankshaft back until the slot in the injection pump timing pulley is at 11 o'clock.

  1. Fit the camshaft.
    • Lubricate the bearing shells and journals with engine oil .
      NOTE:
      NOTE:The larger semi-circle is uppermost.
    • Fit the camshaft with the groove parallel with the upper edge of the cylinder head.

  1. Tighten the camshaft bearing caps.
    1. Apply sealer to bearing cap no. 1 in the areas shown.
    1. Fit bearing caps nos. 1, 3 and 5 with the oiled bearing shells and screw on the nuts.
      CAUTION:
      CAUTION:Tighten them a turn at a time.
    1. Tighten the nuts, a turn at a time, in the indicated order until the specified torque is achieved.

  1. Seal the join between the bearing cap and cylinder head with a thin bead of sealer on both sides.
  1. Check the valve clearance and adjust as necessary.

  1. Fit bearing caps nos. 2 and 4 and the oil baffle.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Use the camshaft bolt to install it.
    Install the camshaft seal.
  1. Install the camshaft timing belt.
