EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION

1.6 TS, 2.0 TS

High consumption during the first few thousand kilometres is considered normal.

Results of the tests
0PRELIMINARY CHECKSAll OKProblems metOperation

Check that the level of the engine oil is not high Op. 1048A10

Check that there is no engine oil in the coolant

Check that the end of the exhaust pipe is not dirty with oil

Check whether there is blueish smoke in the exhaust

Carry out a consumption test

Continue to Step 1Engine oil leaksSee table X12 ENGINE OIL LEAKS
Oil level outside the limitsRestore the correct level Op. 1084A10
Oil in the cooling circuitContinue to Step 2
Exhaust tail pipe dirty with oilContinue to Step 2

1SPARK PLUG CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that there is no oil fouling the spark plugsContinue to Step 2Spark plugs fouled by oilContinue to Step 2
2CYLINDER BLOCK/CRANKCASE PLANE CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation

Remove the cylinder head Op. 1016C10

That that the following are absent:

  • oily dross on the valves;
  • defects in the cylinder block/crankcase plane;
  • defects in the cylinder head gasket;
Continue to Step 3Cylinder block/crankcase plane defectiveReface the cylinder block/crankcase
Presence of oily dross on the valvesOverhaul the cylinder head Op. 1016E10
3CYLINDER LINER/BORE CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation

Check the cylinder liners/bores. In particular:

  • no deep machining scoring;
  • no vitrification of the liners/bores;
  • make sure that there is no ovality or wear
Continue to Step 4Deep scoring or excessive ovalityReplace the engine Op. 1004B10

1.9 JTD 16V

High consumption during the first few thousand kilometres is considered normal.

Results of the tests
0PRELIMINARY CHECKSAll OKProblems metOperation
Visually check for any leaks which could have caused the high consumptionContinue to Step 1Obvious oil leaksLocate the leaks and eliminate them
1CYLINDER HEAD OIL PENETRATION CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation

Remove the cylinder head and check:

  • That there are no carbon deposits in the combustion chambers and on the inlet valves
  • That the valve stems are not worn
Continue to Step 2Excessive clearance between the valve stem and valve guide and between the valve stem and oil sealReplace the damaged/worn components Op. 1016E10
2ENGINE OIL PENETRATION CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation

Check the piston seals, in particular:

  • that they are not broken or damaged
  • that the actual rings are correctly fitted
  • that there is no seizing or sticking in the grooves
Continue to Step 3Piston seals damaged or seizedReplace pistons, pins and seals
Piston seals not correctly fittedFit the seals correctly
3CYLINDER LINER/BORE CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation

Check:

  • The condition of the surfaces and dimensions (ovality/taper) of the cylinder liners/bores;
  • Piston - liner/bore fitting clearance;
Continue to Step 4Liner/bore surfaces non-compliantGrind the cylinder liners/bores
Dimensions outside of the toleranceGrind the cylinder liners/bores
Fitting clearance incorrectReplace the pistons, pins and seals, following the fitting clearances
4CHECK ON CORRECT OPERATIONAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the fault is no longer presentEnd of diagnosis

All versions

High consumption during the first few thousand kilometres is considered normal.

Results of the tests
0PRELIMINARY CHECKSAll OKProblems metOperation

Preliminarily check:

  • if there is service information on the subject
  • no water or other fluids in the fuel tank
Continue to Step 1Presence of dirt in the fuel tankClean the fuel tank
1ROAD TEST THE VEHICLEAll OKProblems metOperation
With the engine at operating temperature and after a long period of deceleration, check when then accelerating whether the problem is considerably worseContinue to Step 2Increase in acceleration fumes (after deceleration) caused by oil from the piston rings or valve guidesContinue to Step 3
2CHECKING BLOW-BY CIRCUITAll OKProblems metOperation
Check the condition of the blow-by gases intake circuit. In particular, check that there are no obstructions in the separator or in the pipesContinue to Step 3Fault in the pipe from separator to intakeRestore the correct operation of the circuit: if necessary, replace the pipes
Fault in separator (rocker cover)Restore the correct operation of the circuit; if necessary replace the rocker cover
3CHECKING CAUSE OF INSUFFICIENT COMPRESSIONAll OKProblems metOperation

Remove-refit the cylinder head:

  • Check the condition of the cylinders/piston rings
  • the seal of the valve oil seals
Continue to Step 4Wear on cylinders/piston rings outside toleranceRestore the correct clearances
Valve oil seals leakingReplace the oil seals, if necessary, overhaul the head
4CHECK ON CORRECT OPERATIONAll OKProblems metOperation
Check that the fault is no longer presentEnd of diagnosis

1CHECKING WITH DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENTAll OKProblems metOperation

Connect the Examiner diagnostic equipment to the diagnostic connector and check the engine management control unit:

  • in error mode
  • that there are no faults
Continue to Step 2An error is detected in the control unitContinue following the instructions for the diagnostic equipment
