Mark brake pads when removing if they are to be reused. Reinstall in their original position to prevent uneven braking.
Removing
–  Raise the vehicle.
–  Remove wheels.
  W00-10002
–  Push brake lever in direction of -arrow- and unhook handbrake cable from brake lever.

–  Remove securing bolts from brake caliper, to do this counterhold on guide pins.
–  Remove brake caliper and secure with wire so that weight of brake caliper does not strain or damage brake hose.
  Caution
Do not leave the brake caliper hanging from the brake hose.
–  Remove brake pads.
Cleaning:
  WARNING
Do not blow out brake system with compressed air; the resulting dust constitutes a health hazard!
–  Thoroughly clean contact surfaces for pad retainers (brake pads) on brake carrier and remove corrosion.
–  Clean brake caliper, in particular the bonding surface on the brake pad. It must be free of adhesive and grease residues.
Use only methylated spirits for cleaning the brake caliper housing.
Installing
Use new bolts.
Before turning piston back, draw off brake fluid from reservoir. Otherwise, fluid can overflow and cause damage, particularly if the reservoir has been topped up.
  WARNING
Brake fluid is poisonous and must NOT be drawn off by sucking through a hose.

–  Apply piston compressing tool -T 10165- on piston of brake caliper housing.
–  Screw in piston by turning knurled wheel of piston compressing tool -T 10165- clockwise, do not damage protective cap when doing so.
  Note
If piston will not move easily, a 13 mm open-ended spanner can be applied at the appropriate flats -arrow-.
–  If fitted, pull protective foil off pad backplates.
–  Fit brake pads in brake carrier.
  Note
The springs on the brake pads are only fitted on certain models.
–  Install brake caliper.
Use new bolts.
  A46-0313
–  Secure brake caliper to brake carrier with new securing bolts, counterholding at guide pins.
  N46-0184
–  Push handbrake cable through bracket on brake caliper until both locking lugs -arrows- engage.
–  Push brake lever in direction of -arrow- and attach handbrake cable onto brake lever.
–  Fit wheels.
Tightening torque for wheel bolts → Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr.44
  Note
t  After installation, firmly depress the brake pedal several times with the vehicle stationary so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.
t  Check brake fluid level after changing brake pads.
  Caution
Make sure that the brakes work properly before the vehicle is driven on the road.
