Description and operation: Current generation › Battery

The current generation system consists of a battery and an alternator.

Battery

This is a low maintenance, element battery. Elements are closed by means of leak-proof, clip-on caps and breathing devices through the caps fitted with gas/liquid separators.

Note: If you notice that the level of electrolyte is lower than the minimum level line drawn on the plastic battery container, open the cap set cover and top up with distilled, deionised water (as for ordinary batteries). Never fast recharge this battery at voltages higher than 15.5 V. Never recharge with other currents or high amperage.

Alternator

The alternator must provide sufficient current to the system to ensure the battery charge, in all conditions of operation. The alternator produces alternating current which is converted into direct current by a specific rectifier.

The alternator shaft (rotor) is rotated by the crankshaft by means of a belt. The rotor is energised and generates a magnetic field which induces alternating current on the fix coil (stator). A diode rectifier bridge located on the rear of the alternator, transforms the alternating current in direct current which is conveyed to recharge the battery. A voltage regulator keeps the current at 14 V constantly, regardless of engine load and ratio.

A small radial fan is fixed to the pulley. It cools the alternator.

Bench overhauling

The alternator can be bench overhauled. For procedure see Repair Procedures Op. 5530A14 - 5530A18.

Checking current intensity

  • Fit an amperometric multimeter on the alternator-junction joint wire;
  • Start the engine and take it to 3000 - 4000 rpm;
  • Turn on all the electric devices available;
  • Read maximum output current value on the multimeter display.

If the reading is over 5A lower than prescribed, overhaul the alternator.
