- Description and operation: Engine starting › Ignition switch
The starting system consists of a switch controlled by means of the ignition key and by the starter motor which is directly connected to the battery.
Ignition switch
The ignition switch (with included steering lock function) houses the lock and the Fiat CODE aerial (see 5580E).
Starter motor
This is a DC, series energised starter motor. Its features include high pick-up torque to provide the engine with the initial impulse required and a high rpm to sustain increase in speed.
When the ignition key is turned, the motor coils are energised thus generating electromagnetic force to turn the motor pignon. At the same time the pignon engagement electric magnetic engages the pignon on the flywheel crown which consequently starts engine revolution. A one-way joint allows the engine to increase ratio while the pignon is still engaged.
Bench overhauling
The starter motor can be bench overhauled. For the procedure, see Repair procedure Op. 5520B14 - 5520B18.
