X05 Excessive oil consumption

DiagnosisX05 Excessive oil consumption

The engine is working correctly but oil consumption is higher than previously registered during the vehicle's lift.

NOTE High consumption during the first few thousand km is to be considered normal.

Preliminarily check:
– leakages which may have caused excessive consumption (see table X12)
– oil type (suitable for the specific engine)

1		CHECK CYLINDER HEAD OIL INFILTRATIONS Remove cylinder head and check: – there is no oil in the combustion chambers and on the intake valves – there is no wear or seizing on the valve stems	Go to Step 2	Incorrect clearance between head parts Head parts damaged or distorted	Replace parts PROCEDURE OP. 1016E10
2		CHECK PISTON OIL INFILTRATION Check piston rings. In particular check: – they are neither broken nor damaged – they are correctly assembled – there is no seizing	Go to Step 3	Damaged or seized piston rings Incorrect piston ring assembly	Replace piston rings PROCEDURE 1028H
3		CHECK CORRECT OPERATION Check the fault is no longer present	End of test	Fault persists	Seek the fault starting from another symptom
