Crank case and components
Operation
This is the main structural part of the engine.
It is designed to house and support all the crankshaft components.
Type
The engine block is cast iron, with high mechanical strength.
The crankshaft is supported by means of seven main bearings.
The cylinders are formed directly in the engine block, and are graded into three sizes plus one oversize.
The cylinder block/crankcase houses a counter-balance shaft which is supported by means of a central bush and a ball bearing at the front and rear.
There are special channels in the engine block walls which allow the flow of coolant and lubricating oil.
There is a jet at the bottom of each cylinder which sprays oil onto the piston crown to lubricate/cool it.
