Definitions
Definitions
These explanations refer only to this assembly group: Automatic gearbox 099 - 4-speed. These definitions are not necessarily generally valid.
Further information on this subject can be found in
t  → No.172
and in
t  Workshop manual Alhambra 1996 ►, Self-diagnosis for automatic gearbox 099 - 4-speed
ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid)
Gear oil for automatic gearbox
ATF level
The level of ATF in gearbox when “full”. When measuring ATF level, refer to specifications in workshop manual.
Brakes
They brake and hold certain rotating parts in the gearbox. Automatic gearbox 099 - 4-speed has two disc brakes. Unlike the clutches, the brakes are supported on the gearbox housing.
Torque converter
Transfers the engine torque to the automatic gearbox and acts as a drive-away clutch. The torque converter also includes the lock-up clutch.
Self-diagnosis
The capability of the control unit
to detect faults,
to react to faults,
to store faults,
to register values and make them available in measured value block.
Performing self-diagnosis
Connecting the fault reader to be able to interrogate the fault memory.
Gearbox speed sender -G38-
The sender records the speed of the large sun gear in the planetary gearbox and transmits it to the automatic gearbox control unit. For further information about this, see → No.172.
Vehicle speed sender -G68-
The sender records the speed of the output gear and transmits it to the automatic gearbox control unit (not to the speedometer). For further information about this, see → No.172.
Clutches
Together with the brakes, they engage the individual gears.
Wiring
Routing of electrical wiring and components in vehicle.
Selector lever lock solenoid -N110-
Located in the selector mechanism close to the selector lever. Prevents (unintentional) movement of the selector lever from positions “P” and “N” when the brake pedal is not depressed.
Solenoid valves
Opens and closes the oil channels to the clutches and brakes.
Multi-function switch -F125-
Electrical switch with various tasks. For further information about this, see → No.172.
Parking lock
The parking lock gear is mechanically locked when the vehicle is stationary and prevents the vehicle from rolling (involuntarily).
Planetary gear
Is a mechanical component of the automatic gearbox and is shifted via the clutches and brakes without interrupting power transmission.
Valve body
Located on the bottom of the gearbox and is inside the ATF pan. Its valves regulate and distribute hydraulic pressure via the oil channels to the shift elements (clutches and brakes).
Automatic gearbox control unit -J217-
The electronic control unit defines the shift points. This monitors the function of the gearbox via the self-diagnosis. If a component or sensor fails, an emergency running programme ensures the vehicle can still be driven.
TCC (Torque converter lock-up clutch)
It transmits engine torque mechanically to the gearbox.
Ignition key withdrawal lock
It ensures that the ignition key can only be withdrawn when park position is selected and in addition mechanically locks the selector lever in this position.
