Alternator, Check > < Alternator - Remove and Install (with Air Conditioning)

Alternator – Remove and Install (without Air Conditioning)

  Remove

Disconnect ground cable from battery.

Remove air cleaner housing – see illustration "Air Duct (X 20 XEV, X 20 XER)".

Remove Ribbed V-belt, – see operation "Ribbed V-belt, Remove and Install (without Air Conditioning)".

Remove ribbed V-belt tensioner – see operation "Ribbed V-belt Tensioner, Remove and Install (without Air Conditioning)".

Remove alternator support (1) and alternator shackle (2).

Disconnect cable connections from alternator.

Remove fastening bolts (3) from cylinder block and remove alternator with alternator support upwards.

For vehicles with right-hand drive: remove alternator with alternator support downwards.

When replacing the alternator, reinstall alternator support.

Note:   Check alternator – see operation "Alternator, Check" (X 16 XEL Engine) in group "J".

Disassemble and reassemble alternator – see operation "Bosch Compact Alternator, Disassemble and Reassemble" (X 16 XEL Engine) in group "J".

  Install

Attach alternator with alternator support to cylinder block – tightening torque 35 Nm / 26 lbf. ft.

Attach cable connections to alternator – observe cable routing.

Attach alternator support to alternator and intake manifold – tightening torque 20 Nm / 15 lbf. ft.

Attach alternator shackle to intake manifold, alternator and coolant flange – tightening torque 20 Nm / 15 lbf. ft.

Install ribbed V-belt tensioner – see operation "Ribbed V-belt Tensioner, Remove and Install (without Air Conditioning)".

Install ribbed V-belt, – see operation "Ribbed V-belt, Remove and Install (without Air Conditioning)".

Install air cleaner housing – see illustration "Air Duct (X 20 XEV, X 20 XER)".

Connect ground cable to battery.
