Check timing (Y 17 DTL, with air conditioning, LHD)

1.   Open bonnet
Important:   On vehicles from model year 04 with ESP - the steering angle sensor loses its basic adjustment each time the battery is disconnected. It must be recalibrated.
2.   Disconnect battery
•   Detach ground cable
3.   Remove air cleaner housing (1)
•   Remove wiring harness plug for hot film mass air flow meter (3)
Release in direction of arrow
•   Remove air intake hose (4)
Loosen clamp (5)
•   Remove bolt (2)

4.   Detach front right wheel
5.   Raise vehicle
6.   Remove front right wheel
•   Remove 4 bolts
7.   Raise vehicle
8.   Detach ribbed V-belt cover
•   Remove 3 bolts (1)
•   Remove clip (arrow).

9.   Remove ribbed V-belt
•   Tension ribbed V-belt tensioner in direction of arrow
Note:   Mark direction of rotation
With KM-913-A

10.   Detach upper toothed belt cover
•   Remove 2 lower bolts (arrows)

11.   Detach alternator wiring harness
•   Disconnect wiring harness plug (1)
•   Unscrew nut (2)

12.   Lower vehicle
13.   Remove wiring trough (1)
•   Unclip vacuum lines (2)
•   Unclip wiring trough
2 clips (arrows)
•   Remove bolt (3)
•   Unclip alternator wiring harness

14.   Remove upper toothed belt cover
•   Remove 6 bolts
Note:   Pay attention to differing cable lengths. Withdraw top toothed belt cover from bottom toothed belt cover guide bushing and carefully remove.

15.   Check no.1 cylinder TDC
•   Rotate crankshaft evenly until torsional vibration damper (2) mark is flush with pin (3) on oil pump cover. No.1 cylinder exhaust camshaft (1) must be on top.
Important:   If the DTC fixing bolts cannot be used, the timing must be adjusted - see operation "Adjust timing".
•   Screw in the TDC fixing bolts (arrows)
Camshaft pulley (M6)
Drive gear injection pumps (M8)
•   Unscrew TDC-fixing bolts

16.   Attach upper toothed belt cover
Note:   When installing toothed belt cover, pull lower corner forwards. Ensure correct seating of guide bushing.
•   Tighten 5 bolts ( 9.8 Nm )
17.   Attach wiring trough
•   Clip in vacuum lines
•   Clip-in wiring trough
•   Tighten bolt
•   Clip in alternator wiring harness
18.   Raise vehicle
19.   Attach alternator wiring harness
•   Connect wiring harness plug.
•   Screw in nut
20.   Fasten upper part of toothed belt cover
•   Tighten 3 bolts ( 9.8 Nm )
21.   Install ribbed V-belt
Note:   Pay attention to running direction and installation position
•   Release ribbed V-belt tensioner
22.   Attach ribbed V-belt cover
•   Tighten bolts
•   Install clip
23.   Lower vehicle
24.   Install right front wheel
•   Screw in bolts
25.   Lower vehicle
26.   Fasten right front wheel
•   Tighten bolts ( 110 Nm )
27.   Install air cleaner housing
•   Tighten bolt
•   Fasten air intake hose.
Fasten clamp ( 5 Nm )
•   Connect wiring harness plug to hot film mass air flow meter
28.   Connect battery
29.   Calibrate steering angle sensor
•   Switch on ignition
Note:   Rotate the steering wheel one time from its right-hand to its left-hand stop.
30.   Program volatile memories
31.   Close bonnet
