Steering, Position Straight Ahead

After all necessary operations on the steering gear or steering column assembly are completed (removing and reinstalling, or disassembling and reassembling), the exact straight ahead driving position of the steering is to be checked in each case.

The straight ahead driving position is attained if the reference dimension

I = 420 - 1/ + 2 m m/ 16.8 - 0.04/ + 0.08 in.

Check this by placing Inspection Gauge KM-551 (420 mm/16.54 in.) between right shoulder of bellows seat and left mounting shoulder of steering gear housing (seen in driving direction).

Hold steering wheel in this straight ahead position.

(In illustration D 4271 the air cleaner is removed).

The following conditions must be fulfilled:

1.    The clamp flange bolt for steering spindle must be lying horizontally on top.

2.   The steering wheel must be centred on the steering spindle (steering wheel spokes are centred diagonally and pointing downward).

Regarding Condition 1.          If the clamp bolt is slanted - e.g. pinion is displaced one cog on the rack (installation mistake) - the steering pinion position must be corrected immediately.

Regarding Conditon 2.           If steering wheel is off centre more than + 5 ° (clamp flange bolt must be lying horizontally and on top) remove steering wheel from steering spindle with KM-210-A and centre on the spindle splines.
