Servicing is restricted to replacement of track rods and rubber boots. The necessary information can be found on → Chapter onwards.
1 - Self-tapping screw, 8 Nm
2 - Heat shield
q   for 1.4 ltr. TDI only
3 - Universal joint on steering column.
4 - Hexagon bolt, 20 Nm and turn 90° further
q   Renew
5 - Sealing collar
6 - Gasket
q   Must be renewed when power steering sensor -G250- → Item is renewed.
7 - Power steering sensor -G250-
q   Only installed up to chassis number 8Z1 N019 007 and from 8Z1 N019 032 to 8Z1 N019 035.
q   A power steering sensor is no longer fitted as of chassis number 8Z1 N019 036. This function has been taken over by steering angle sender -G85-
8 - Socket head bolt, 5 Nm
9 - Self-locking hexagon nut, 45 Nm
q   Counterhold at hexagon socket on ball joint when releasing and tightening the nut
10 - Steering arm on wheel bearing housing
11 - Lock nut, 50 Nm
q   Counterhold at flats on track rod ball joint when loosening and tightening
12 - O-ring
q   Renew
13 - Return line
q   Steering box - motor/pump unit
q   Must not be clamped during dismantling operations
q   Tightening torque of union bolt: 30 Nm
14 - Banjo bolt with non-return valve, 36 Nm
15 - Seal
q   Renew
16 - Expansion hose
q   Motor/pump unit - steering box
q   Must not be clamped during dismantling operations
17 - Power steering box
q   Adjusting → Chapter
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
q   Different versions available → Parts catalogue
q   A washer is fitted between the rubber insert → Item and the subframe → Item; this is no longer required when the steering box or the rubber insert is renewed (the washer was installed up to approx. week 31/00).
18 - Clamp with rubber insert
q   A washer is fitted between the rubber insert and the subframe → Item; this is no longer required when the steering box or the rubber insert is renewed (the washer was installed up to approx. week 31/00).
19 - Subframe
q   With recess (in vehicles with petrol engine)
q   Without recess (in vehicles with diesel engine)
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
20 - Hexagon bolt, 70 Nm and turn 90° further
q   Renew
21 - Hexagon bolt
q   50 Nm and turn 90° further
q   Renew
22 - Hexagon bolt, 50 Nm
23 - Pendulum support
q   Illustrated in Fig. for gearbox 02T
24 - Hexagon bolt
q   Gearbox 02T and 02J
–  Renew hexagon bolt.
–  Insert hexagon bolt from left side.
q   Tightening torque: 50 Nm and turn 90° further
25 - Hexagon nut
q   Only for gearboxes 02J and 02T
