Removal and Installation

Brake, hose clamp
Remove
1. Slacken the wheel nuts, raise the vehicle and remove the rear road wheels.

2. Disconnect the brake pipe unions.
1. Clamp the flexible brake hoses.
2. Disconnect the brake pipe unions.
3. Remove the retaining clips.

3. Detach the load apportioning valve from the rear axle bracket.
1. Remove the spring clip.
2. Detach the washer and valve link rod.
3. If the bracket bush is worn or damaged, remove it.

4. Remove the brake drum.
1. Remove the two drum retainers.
2. Remove the brake drums.

5. Remove the dust covers.
3‐door, 4‐door, 5‐door built up to 12/1994 and Wagon built up to 07/1995

CAUTION:

Before removing mark the hub assemblies to ensure they are refitted to the correct sides.

NOTE:

The hub retaining nuts are handed, left‐hand thread on left‐hand side and right‐hand thread on right‐hand side.
6. Remove the hub assemblies (one nut each side).
1. Remove the hub retaining nuts.
2. Remove the hub assemblies.
All vehicles
7. Disconnect the brake pipes from the wheel cylinders.

8. Remove the back plates (four bolts each side).
9. Support the axle assembly.

10. Remove the shock absorber lower mounting bolts (one each side).

11. Lower and remove the axle assembly (four nuts and two U‐bolts each side).
Install

NOTE:

The final tightening of the rear suspension components should be carried out when the vehicle weight is on the road wheels.
12. Refit the components in reverse order.

CAUTION:

Ensure the hub assemblies are fitted to the correct sides as previously marked.

13. Bleed the brake system (refer to Operation Number 12 141 0).
14. Adjust the load apportioning valve linkage (refer to Operation Number 12 136 0).
