SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER DISPOSAL

If a vehicle is to be scrapped and contains an unactivated pre-tensioner, the reel and pre-tensioner unit must be manually triggered using the following recommended procedure.

Equipment required

  • 2 used tyres - 15 inch or larger.
  • Wheel and used tyre assembly.
  • 2 lengths of wire - 7 metres for suspending pre-tensioner unit and 6 metres for fastening tyres. Use vehicle wire of at least 1.25 mm core wire or iron wire at least 1.2 mm diameter.

CAUTION:

• Carry out work outdoor and on a flat dust free concrete surface. • Be careful not to bump or drop pre-tensioner unit once sensor lock has been disengaged. • Wear a face shield and gloves and stay at least 5 metres from tyres when triggering a pre-tensioner. • When triggered the tensioner becomes very hot. Wait 30 minutes before disposal - NEVER apply water to unit. • Place triggered pre-tensioner in strong plastic bag and seal securely. • NEVER attempt to dispose of an untriggered pre-tensioner unit.
