Diagram showing the lower section of the engine timing belt assembly with callout numbers 24, 25, 26, and 27 pointing to the crankshaft pulley bolt, crankshaft pulley, lower cover bolts, and lower cover respectively.
  1. Remove crankshaft pulley bolt and washer.
  2. Remove crankshaft pulley.
  3. Remove 3 bolts securing timing belt lower cover.
  4. Remove lower cover and rubber seals.
Diagram showing the timing belt routing over gears with callout numbers 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33 indicating the tensioner pulley bolt, backplate screw, tensioner pulley, screw, timing belt, and camshaft gear.
  1. Slacken tensioner pulley bolt ½ turn.
  2. Slacken tensioner backplate screw ½ turn.
  3. Push tensioner pulley down to fully OFF position.
  4. Tighten screw to 10 Nm.
  5. Ease timing belt from gears; discard belt.

CAUTION: Do not rotate crankshaft or camshaft with timing belt removed and cylinder head fitted.

  1. Clean timing gears and pulleys.
  2. Check correct alignment of timing marks for 90° B.T.D.C.

Note: Crankshaft gear dots are aligned with flange on oil pump; camshaft gear mark to right aligns with top face of cylinder head.

  1. Fit timing belt over crankshaft gear and then over camshaft gear keeping belt taut from crankshaft to camshaft gears.
  2. Using fingers only, ease timing belt over tensioner pulley and coolant pump drive gear ensuring belt is positioned centrally around gears and pulley.
  3. Ensure inserts are fitted in timing belt lower cover.
  4. Fit timing belt lower cover, ensuring correct position of seals; tighten screws to 10 Nm.
Diagram showing the crankshaft pulley being fitted onto the crankshaft gear, with an arrow indicating the indent on the pulley locating over a lug on the gear.
  1. Fit crankshaft pulley to crankshaft gear ensuring that indent on pulley locates over gear lug (arrowed).
  2. Fit crankshaft pulley bolt and washer, tighten bolt to 160 Nm.
  3. Remove tool 18G 1571.
  4. Position starter motor to flywheel housing, position earth lead; fit bolts and tighten to 45 Nm.
  5. Position starter motor bracket to studs on engine, fit but do not tighten washers and nuts.
  6. Fit bolt and washer securing bracket to starter motor.
  7. Tighten starter motor bracket bolt to 45 Nm and nuts to 25 Nm.
  8. Fit terminal lead; tighten nut.
  9. Connect Lucars to starter motor.
  10. Position rubber washers, fit engine R.H. mounting; fit but do not tighten mounting to body bolt.
  11. Fit but do not tighten mounting to engine nuts.
  12. Tighten mounting bolt to 100 Nm and nuts to 82 Nm.
  13. Remove jack.
  14. Slacken but do not remove tensioner backplate screw.
  15. Rotate crankshaft clockwise 2 complete revolutions and align camshaft gear timing gear with top face of cylinder head.
  16. Tighten tensioner backplate screw to 10 Nm.
  17. Tighten tensioner pulley bolt to 45 Nm.
  18. Ensure inserts are fitted in timing belt upper front cover.
