Differential: adjusting – SEAT Leon Mk1
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Interior extractor with striker (2 legs) -T20004-
t  Case -U-40200-
t  Universal dial gauge support (bolt fit) -T20020-

The differential must always be adjusted whenever any of the following elements has been changed:
t  Gearbox housing
t  Clutch housing
t  Differential housing
t  Differential conic roller bearings
–  Fit the exterior ring/conic roller bearing in the clutch housing → Fig.
Differential: adjusting – SEAT Leon Mk1  Note!
The interior and exterior rings of the conic roller bearings come in pairs. Do not mix them when fitting.

–  Release the exterior ring/conic roller bearing from the gearbox housing. To do this, a second mechanic will have to hold the housing.
  E39-0074
–  Refit the exterior ring of the conic roller bearing, without the adjustment washer, in the gearbox housing. To do this, a second mechanic will have to hold the housing.
–  Fit the differential in the clutch housing.
–  Fit the gearbox housing and tighten with 5 bolts to the corresponding torque.
  E39-0076
–  Set up a dial gauge and adjust to “0” with 1 mm of previous tension.
–  Move the differential up and down and note the play reflected by the dial gauge (Example: 2.30 mm)
Differential: adjusting – SEAT Leon Mk1  Note!
While measuring, do not turn the differential because the bearings might seat and the result of the measurement would be incorrect.
Determination of the adjustment washer
The previous tension required for the differential bearings is achieved when a constant pressure value (0.20 mm) is added to the value obtained in the previous measurement.
Example:
  E39-0075
Measurement value2.30 mm
+ constant pressure value0.20 mm
Thickness of the adjustment
washer required =
2.50 mm

–  Withdraw the gearbox housing and release the exterior ring/conic roller bearing from the gearbox housing.
–  Fit the necessary adjustment washer. If more than two washers are required, fit the thickest washer first.
–  The adjustment washers are listed in the spares catalogue.
  E39-0074
–  End the adjustment of the differential by refitting the exterior ring/conic roller bearing of the gearbox housing.
