Installing the steering column
Installing the steering column
  Note
t  Do not carry out repair work on the steering column.
t  When installing the old steering column again do not remove the bushing. Only replace the bushing on the old steering column if damaged.
t  Always replace the self-locking nuts and screws.
t  Replace the affected screws and nuts.
t  New steering columns supplied as spare parts are secured for transport. This transport security must be removed once the steering column has been installed.
t  Steering columns are supplied as a spare part with ignition lock housing but without lock cylinder and ignition starter switch. The lock cylinder and ignition starter switch must be removed from the removed steering column or be obtained and installed as a spare part.
   
t  If a spare part steering column is fitted, a new bushing -3- and a new screw -3- must first be fitted in the steering column fork -4- before installing the steering column.
–  Insert the new bushing -2- in the steering column fork -4-.
–  Insert and tighten new new screw -3-.

–  Carefully insert the new steering column -1- through the dash panel opening.
–  Attach steering column -1- to the central pipe with screws -arrows-, but do not tighten the screws yet.

–  Insert bushing -3- into the support on the central pipe -4-.

–  Insert and tighten screw -1-.

–  Tighten screws -arrows-.

–  Remove the transport security -3- or the wire security (only on steering columns with steering wheel adjustment).

–  Position the universal joint of the steering column in -direction of arrow- on the shaft of the power-steering gear in the marked location.
–  Insert and tighten new new screw -1-.
For vehicles up to MY 2010
  S48-0170
–  Install cover -2- and tighten with plastic nuts -1-.
–  Install clutch pedal switch → Gearbox; Rep. gr.30.
–  Install the damping trim panel below the dash panel → Body Work; Rep. gr.70.

–  Install cable strap -4- with wiring loom -3- at the steering column.
–  Attach wiring loom -3- to the cable guide holder -1- and close the holder cover -2-.

–  Install cable strap -4- with wiring loom -3- at the steering column.
–  Attach cable strap -2- with wiring loom -1- to the steering column -arrows-.

–  Screw on earth strap -arrow-.
–  Unplug connector for the ignition starter switch -1- and connect the connector for the immobilizer -2- reading coil.
–  Install the steering-column control → Electrical System; Rep. gr.94.
–  Install bottom steering column trim panel → Body Work; Rep. gr.70.
–  Install top steering column trim panel or dash panel protective label → Body Work; Rep. gr.70.
–  Install the steering wheel with airbag → Body Work; Rep. gr.69.
  Note
Pay attention to the measures after re-connecting the battery → Electrical System; Rep. gr.27.
–  Connect battery → Electrical System; Rep. gr.27.
–  Interrogate fault memory or eliminate fault → Vehicle diagnostic tester.

Bushing on the steering column fork7 Nm
Bushing to central pipe20 Nm
Steering column to central pipe23 Nm
Universal joint of steering column to power-steering shaft
t  Use new screw!
20 Nm + 90°
