Two views of the Modine heat exchanger unit, with callout number 1 pointing to the pressure relief valve on the top surface.

The MODINE heat exchanger is designed to reduce engine oil temperature. This is achieved by the oil giving up a proportion of its heat to the coolant.

Hot oil from the engine enters the exchanger, flows in parallel through interconnected cooling plates and leaves via a filter.

After filtration, the oil returns to the engine through a fitting in the middle of the exchanger. Coolant enters the cooling sleeve, flows around the oil-filled plates to remove the heat and then returns to the engine cooling system.

Under extreme running conditions (e.g. cold starting, excessive oil flow, falling oil pressure) pressure relief valve (1) situated inside the exchanger allows the oil to flow around the cooling plates, thus ensuring a steady supply to the engine.

Cross-sectional diagram of the heat exchanger showing internal oil and coolant flow paths, with callouts 1, 2, 3 and arrows A, B indicating flow direction.
  1. Stainless steel cooling plates with built-in oil ports.
  2. Oil radiator inlet control valve; receives warm oil from engine and distributes it to cooling plates.
  3. Oil radiator outlet control valve; receives cooled oil from cooling plates and directs it to filter.
