FUEL PUMP

Specifications

System details

The fuel pump is part of a single assembly with the level gauge and fuel filter. Components cannot therefore be replaced individually.

DESCRIPTION OF COMPONENTS

Type

The electric pump submerged in the fuel is volumetric roller type with brush motor and permanent magnet excitation.

Operation

Operating principle

Impeller (1) is turned by the electric motor to create volumes (2) that migrate from intake port (3) to outlet port (4).

These volumes are delimited by rollers (5) that adhere to outer race (6) during motor rotation.

The pump is fitted with two valves, a check valve to prevent the fuel circuit emptying (with the pump off); a second pressure relief valve (7) that bypasses the outlet to the intake when pressure levels exceed 5 bars.

DESCRIPTION OF COMPONENTS

INERTIA SWITCH

Specifications

Function

The inertia switch fitted to the left of the driver's seat cuts off the fuel pump earth connection if the vehicle crashes and thus cuts off the fuel flow to the injection system.

Composition

Operating principles

A steel ball (1) fitted in a tapered housing (2) is normally held in place by the attractive force of an adjacent magnet.

Under specific acceleration loads, the ball is released from the magnetic detent and gradually emerges from the tapered mount. Its upward movement is dependent on cone angle.

A rapid release mechanism (3) over the ball forms a normally closed (NC) electrical circuit.

When struck by the ball, the mechanism changes position from a NC circuit to a normally open (NA) circuit and breaks the fuel pump earth circuit.

The switch may be reset by pressing a button protected by a flexible cover (4).

if a smell of fuel or fuel system leaks are noted after even an apparently slight impact, do not reset the inertia switch but find and repair the fault to prevent the risk of fire. Otherwise, if no leaks are noted and the vehicle can be driven away, press the button to reactivate the pump.

DESCRIPTION OF COMPONENTS

2.0 TB

SUBMERGED PUMP ASSEMBLY COMPLETE WITH LEVEL GAUGE

Composition

Structure

The assembly consists mainly of:

  • fuel pump (1).
  • fuel filter (2).
  • float type level gauge (3).
  • diaphragm pressure regulator (4).
  • mesh prefilter (5).
DESCRIPTION OF COMPONENTS

Type

The fuel pump is equipped with a permanent magnet electric motor (1) that drives pump impeller (2) and a terminal mount cover (3) that contains electrical and hydraulic connections.

The pump stage is single, peripheral flow type that offers high performance under low voltage and temperature conditions.

The benefits compared to pumps that operate on the volumetric princple are as follows:

  • low weight.
  • compact size.
DESCRIPTION OF COMPONENTS

INERTIA SWITCH

Specifications

Function

The inertia switch is fitted to the left of the driver's seat on the interior sill plate beam. If the vehicle crashes, it cuts off the earth connection of the fuel pump and thus the power supply to the injection system.

COMPOSITION

Operating principles

A steel ball (1) fitted in tapered housing (2) is normally held in place by the attractive force of an adjacent magnet.

Under certain acceleration loads, the ball is released from the magnetic lock and gradually emerges upward from the tapered housing following the taper angle.

A quick-release mechanism (3) over the ball forms a normally-closed electrical circuit (N.C.).

When the ball strikes the mechanism, this changes position from a N.C. circuit to a normally open (N.O.) circuit, thus cutting out the fuel pump earth circuit.

The switch may be reset by pressing a button protected by flexible cover (4).

After impact, however slight, do not reset the switch if you smell fuel or notice leaks from the fuel system. Instead, search for the fault and repair it to prevent the risk of fire. Otherwise press the button to reactivate the pump if no leaks are apparent and the car can be driven away.

SUBMERGED PUMP ASSEMBLY COMPLETE WITH LEVEL GAUGE

Composition

Structure

It basically consists of:

  • an electric fuel pump (1)
  • a fuel filter (2)
  • a float level level gauge (3)
  • a pressure regulator (4)
  • a gauze pre-filter (5).
DESCRIPTION OF COMPONENTS

Type

The electric pump is the peripheral flow single type with high performance in low voltage and temperature conditions.

The advantages compared with electric pumps that operate on the volumetric principle are:

  • light.
  • small.
DESCRIPTION OF COMPONENTS

INERTIA SWITCH

Specifications

Function

In the case of an impact, the inertia switch, fitted to the left of the driver's seat on the inner running board crossmember, interrupts the connection to earth for the electric fuel pump and consequently the supply to the injection system.

COMPOSITION

Operating principles

A steel ball (1) fitted in a conical shaped housing (2) is normally kept in place by the attraction force of an adjacent magnet.

In certain acceleration conditions, the ball is released from the magnetic keeper and gradually comes out of the conical shaped support moving upwards depending on the angle of the cone.

There is a rapid release mechanism (3) above the ball that forms the normally closed (N.C.) electrical circuit.

When the mechanism is struck by the ball, it changes position, from a normally closed circuit to a normally open circuit, interrupting the earth circuit for the electric fuel pump.

The switch can be reset by pressing a button protected by a cover (4).

After even a light impact, if there is a smell of fuel or there are leaks from the fuel system, do not turn the switch back on, but search for the cause of the problem and repair it to prevent the risk of fire. If there are no leaks and the vehicle can set off again, press the button to reactivate the pump.
