NOTE LIST
| B | Adjust engine idle speed. If vibration still persists, check engine/gearbox mountings for security. |
| C | If the clutch large ’O’ ring is broken, inspect piston groove for burrs and damage. |
| D | If the clutch is seized or damaged or is excessively worn, inspect remaining clutches for wear and the orifice control valves and throttle valves for free movement. |
| E | If throttle valve B is sticking, inspect clutches for wear. |
| G | If the 1-2 shift valve is stuck closed, the gearbox will not upshift. If stuck open, gearbox has no 1st gear. |
| H | If the 2-3 orifice control valve is sticking, inspect 2nd and 3rd clutches for wear. |
| I | If the 2/3-4 orifice control valve is sticking, inspect the 3rd and 4th clutches for wear. |
| J | If the clutch pressure control valve is stuck closed, gearbox will not shift out of 1st gear. |
| K | Incorrect alignment of main valve body to torque converter housing may cause oil pump seizure. Symptoms are a ticking noise or high pitched squeak related to engine speed. |
| L | If the oil strainer is blocked with metal particles, inspect the oil pump and differential pinion shaft. If both are satisfactory and no cause for the contamination is found, replace the torque converter. |
| M | If the 1st clutch oil feed pipe guide in the right side cover is scored, inspect the ball bearing for excessive movement in the gearcase and if this is satisfactory, replace the right side cover. |
| N | Replace the input shaft if the bushings for the 1st and 4th oil feed pipe are loose or damaged. If the 1st oil feed pipe is damaged, replace the right side cover. |
| O | A worn or damaged one-way clutch is usually caused by shifting between D3 or D4 whilst the wheels are turning in reverse such as rocking the vehicle in mud or snow. |
| P | Inspect for accident damage. |
| Q | Inspect the following for damage or wear: • Reverse selector gear teeth chamfers • Engagement teeth chamfers of output shaft 4th and reverse gears • Selector fork for scuff marks in centre of fork • Differential pinion shaft for wear under pinion gears • Bottom of 3rd clutch for swirl marks • Replace components as necessary. |
| R | Take care not to damage the torque converter housing when replacing the input shaft ball bearing. The oil pump may also have been damaged when the main valve body bolts where tightened; this will result in oil pump seizure if not detected. |
| S | Install input shaft oil seal flush with torque converter housing. If pushed in too far, it will block the main oil passage. |
| T | Harsh downshifts when coasting to a stop with closed throttle may be caused by a bent throttle valve retainer/cam stopper. Throttle control cable adjustment may rectify problem. |
| U | Check that servo separator plate is fitted correctly, the servo valve may have been displaced by hydraulic pressure causing an internal leak and affecting all forward gears. |
| V | Correct throttle cable adjustment is essential for proper operation, not only does it affect shift points and quality but also lock-up clutch operation. A cable which is adjusted too long will result in throttle pressure being too low for the amount of engine torque and may cause clutch slip. A cable adjusted too short will result in too high throttle pressure and harsh shifts, erratic shifts and torque converter hunting. |
