Timing, Check
Remove
Remove cylinder head cover – see operation "Cylinder Head
Cover, Remove and Install".
Remove lower engine compartment cover.
Adjust
Remove plug (1) from cylinder block.
Turn crankshaft in engine rotational direction at the torsion
vibration damper hub until Test Mandrel KM-813 (2) engages the
cylinder block and flywheel or drive disc hole (3) cylinder
block.
Caution
Ensure that the test mandrel does not engage the indentations
for the driver attachment screws in vehicles with automatic
transmission.

Inspect
Check cam position of 1st cylinder. The cam tips (1) must point
upwards. The piston of the 1st cylinder is now in the "TDC
position".
Attach Fixing Tool KM-811 (2) to the camshaft behind the first
bearing support.
For engines operated for up to approx. 20, 000 km/12 500 miles,
the Fixing Tool must lie flat on the sealing surface for the
cylinder head cover.
For engines operated for over 20, 000 km/12 500 miles, the
elongation of the timing chain should also be considered. To
compensate, place a support (I) of 4.61 mm on the intake side.

Install
If Fixing Tool KM-811 does not lie flat on the sealing surface
for the cylinder head cover or support, the timing must be adjusted
– see operation "Timing, Adjust".
Remove Test Mandrel KM-813 and flywheel or drive disc from
cylinder block hole.
Install plug.
Install lower engine compartment cover - tightening torque 5 Nm
/ 3.7 lbf. ft.
Remove Fixing Tool KM-811.
Install cylinder head cover – see operation "Cylinder Head
