NOISE DIAGNOSIS

The increasing sophistication of cars and the ever higher interior comfort have recently highlighted problems of noise, vibrations and wind noise.

Because of this, a diagnosis section has been dedicated to this type of problem.

We should like to emphasise that the customer interview and road test are fundamental steps in identifying the fault and that they indicate the correct starting point for satisfactory diagnosis.

With the customer it will be necessary to focus the fault with a set of questions.

  1. How did the problem start to occur?
  2. On what type of road is it possible to note the problem?

3) Does the problem depend on the temperature?

4) Define the type of noise well

5) If there is vibration, from where is it noted?

Through road tests, certain points should be assessed such as:

  1. Whether the problem occurs with the change of engine speed, transmission or wheels
  2. The problem depends on the speed of the car
  3. The problem depends on engine speed
  4. The problem occurs: during normal driving, at constant speed. during deceleration or acceleration
  5. The problem occurs when cornering

For this reason a GLOSSARY, is given below which is helpful in avoiding wrong interpretations of symptoms which are often very subjective, concerning faults connected with particular noises.

Glossary

TermDefinition
BRAKE WHISTLEwhistling (very high intensity noise) or squeaking leading from the area of the wheels, noted above all when braking
CYCLIC ROARINGhigh and constant intensity noise leading from the engine area, that is repeated at constant intervals
ENGINE BELLOWINGconstant low frequency noise that can be noted only for short lengths of time
ENGINE BLOWINGlow frequency noise coming from the engine, with intensity changing with rpm
ENGINE PART WHISTLEwhistling (very high intensity noise) leading from the engine area which changes with the rpm
ENGINE PINGINGcyclic noise, the intensity of which changes with the load: noticeable with the engine hot in the case of abrupt accelerating using long gears. It may be a metallic or dull sound;
GEARBOX SCRAPINGtypical noise that arises in the gearbox area ("gears scraping"), when engaging gears, which is also difficult
GEARBOX WHISTLEengaging a specific gear with the engine running, noise is heard (whistle) inside the gearbox
HISS (OF A BELT)constant very high frequency noise caused by a drive belt
ROARINGhigh and constant intensity noise leading from the engine area, that can only be noted within a determinate field of rpm
