H10 Stiff steering -
in both directions

During a normal steering movement stiffening of the steering action takes place both to the right and the left.

If required, run a test by steering under different conditions to check that the fault reported actually occurs:

  • - if stiffness occurs in both directions, continue with this table
  • - if stiffness occurs in one direction only, see table H11

Preliminarily check:
- tyre pressure
- wheel geometry
- steering unit cap intactness
- universal joint intactness

1 CHECK TYPE OF FAULT Remove the steering linkage heads (see PROCEDURE OP. 4110B10) and steer in both directions All OK Problems found Intervention
Go to Step 2 Stiffness still present Check correct operation and, if required, replace:
steering column

PROCEDURE OP 4120A10
2 CHECK STEERING LINKAGE Check steering linkages and unit intactness All OK Problems found Intervention
Go to Step 3 Damaged or worn linkages Replace linkages
PROCEDURE OP. 4110B14
Damage steering unit Replace steering unit
PROCEDURE OP. 4120A10
3 CHECK STEERING COLUMN BEARINGS Check the shock absorber upper anchoring points All OK Problems found Intervention
Go to Step 4 Loose or damaged anchoring points Restore correct shock absorber fastening to body
4 CHECK CORRECT OPERATION Check the fault is not longer present All OK Problems found Intervention
