INSTRUMENT PANEL DESCRIPTION

2.4 20V

Description

The instrument panel is a device designed to display information, readings and failures relating to the various functions, through:

  • fuel level gauge with reserve warning light;
  • engine coolant temperature gauge with overheating warning light;
  • rev counter;
  • speedometer;
  • instant fuel consumption gauge;
  • milometer (trip computer);
  • buzzer;
  • warning lights;
  • display.

The instrument panel is a CAN node through which information is exchanged with the Body Computer and with the other electronic units.

Fuel level: the Body Computer receives the signal from the sensor integrated in the pump assembly inside the fuel tank and processes it to guarantee suitable filtering/damping for the panel gauge, also managing the reserve warning light.

Engine coolant temperature: this function involves the display of the engine coolant temperature in the instrument panel and the overheating warning light coming on by means of messages sent via the CAN from the engine management control unit.

Speedometer: this function involves the display of the vehicle speed in the instrument panel; this signal is supplied by the braking system control unit and is processed by the Body Computer.

Milometer:

See E4080 TRIP COMPUTER

Rev counter: this function involves the display on the instrument panel of the engine rotation speed by means of the signal sent via the CAN from the engine management control unit.

Instant fuel consumption gauge; the Body Computer receives the instant fuel consumption signal, via the CAN, from the engine management control unit and processes it with other signals (vehicle speed, engine rpm, fuel level, milometer) transmitting it to the instrument panel which displays it (litres/100Km).

Buzzer: this function involves an acoustic signal warning that the driver''s front door is open with the side lights activated.

Insufficient brake fluid level / EBD braking system failure: the Body Computer receives signals directly from the brake fluid level sensor and the brake pad wear sensors and transmits them, via the CAN, to the instrument panel which lights up the warning light.

Other information, described in the various wiring diagrams, is acquired via the CAN from the instrument panel which lights up the relevant warning lights:

Lastly, there are other warning lights located inside the instrument panel but they are managed directly by the respective electronic units:

The matrix display inside the instrument panel makes it possible to display messages and symbols which integrate the operation of the warning lights and indicators; the most serious problems and most important information includes:

  • insufficient engine oil level: the instrument panel receives the signal directly from the sensor, displaying the messages relating to the amount of oil present, possibly none or the failure of the actual sensor and the need to switch off the engine;
  • inertia switch on: the instrument panel receives the signal, via the CAN, which is used both for displaying the message and the symbol and for the buzzer warning;
  • insufficient engine oil pressure: the Body Computer receives the insufficient engine oil pressure signal, via the CAN, from the engine management control unit and transmits it to the instrument panel.
  • engine coolant temperature overheating;
  • EBD braking system failure;
  • Air Bag failure;
  • insufficient brake fluid level;
  • electric power assisted steering failure;

    (Wiring Diagram ) E7055 SERVOTRONIK DEVICE

  • controlled suspension failure.

    (Wiring Diagram ) E7070 CONTROLLED SUSPENSION

All the other information and faults are described in the various wiring diagrams for the display inside the instrument panel.

In addition to being equipped with a display inside the instrument panel, the vehicle also has a display (or console) in the info-telematic control unit. There is permanent interaction between the two nodes which allows the transmission of various information (via the CAN):

  • clock and outside temperature: always present on both displays;
  • Service (planned maintenance): the relevant message should be displayed close to a service by means of the info-telematic control unit (in days or kilometres);
  • SMS reception:

    (Wiring Diagram ) E3570 BUILT IN RADIO PHONE

  • navigation with pictograms:

    (Wiring Diagram ) E4090 NAVIGATOR

Using the info-telematic control unit it is possible to set the functions which are memorized and shown on the display inside the instrument panel; the most important is the vehicle speed limit setting: when this limit, set by the info-telematic control unit, is exceeded, the instrument panel signals the need to slow down.

During the key-on (INT), the display inside the instrument panel should show the initial check process (or diagnosis). If the result is positive, the message OK should appear plus the symbol of the vehicle; if the outcome is negative, the ideograms relating to the problem or the function diagnosed should be displayed together with a description of the fault and any messages detailing the action to be taken by the driver and there should also be an intermittent acoustic warning.
