ENGINE CUTS OUT WHEN IDLING (THEN RESTARS)

1.4 16v

The customer complains that: The engine cuts out whilst it is running; it can be restarted

1FUEL SUPPLY CIRCUIT CHECKSAll OKProblems encounteredOperation

Check that the air intake/vacuum circuit is working properly

Check the condition of the fuel supply circuit and make sure that it is working properly.

Also check:

- wiring on engine correctly fastened to earth;

- battery correctly fastened to earth;

- positive battery terminal and all leads connected to it correctly fastened

Move on to Step 2Supply fastenings slack or oxidized

Restore correct fastenings

See E1010 POWER SUPPLY

Earth fastenings slack or oxidized

Restore correct fastenings

See E1010 POWER SUPPLY

2CHECKS USING DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENTAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
With the Examiner connected to the engine control unit, check for the presence of any errorsMove on to Step 3Presence of errorsContinue as instructed by the diagnostic equipment
3MOTORIZED THROTTLE CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation

- Check that the motorized throttle is working properly

See Test 1056BW Check on the throttle body actuator operation

- Check the continuity of the wiring between the engine control unit and the motorized throttle

End of diagnosisMotorized throttle defective

Replace the motorized throttle

Op. 1056B14 THROTTLE CASE - R + R

1.9 JTD 8v, 1.9 JTD 16v

The customer complains that: The engine cuts out whilst it is running; it can be restarted

Test results
0PRELIMINARY CHECKSAll OKProblems encounteredOperation

Check that the engine oil level is correct

Op. 0010T11 ENGINE OIL - CHECK LEVEL AND TOP UP, IF NECESSARY

Check that the air intake/vacuum circuit is working properly by carrying out the

See Test 1048OA AIR INTAKE/VACUUM CIRCUIT CHECK

Check the condition of the fuel supply circuit and make sure that it is working properly carrying out the

See Test 1040OA Fuel supply circuit check

Also check:

· wiring on engine correctly fastened to earth;

· battery correctly fastened to earth;

· positive battery terminal and all leads connected to it correctly fastened

Move on to Step 1Oil level incorrect

Restore the correct engine oil level

Op. 0010T11 ENGINE OIL - CHECK LEVEL AND TOP UP, IF NECESSARY

Supply fastenings slack or oxidized

Restore correct fastenings

See E1010 POWER SUPPLY

Earth fastenings slack or oxidized

Restore correct fastenings

See E1010 POWER SUPPLY

1MODE PARAMETERS CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation

Select the following control unit at the diagnostic equipment: EDC16C39 Diesel electronic injection control unit.

Check the value of the following parameters:

· Battery voltage

See Test 5530BB BATTERY VOLTAGE CHECK

· Engine coolant temperature

See Test 5030AA COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR CHECK

· Diesel temperature

· Target Diesel pressure

· Measured Diesel pressure

See Test 1060GH DIESEL PRESSURE CHECK

· Engine rpm

Move on to Step 2
2PARTICULATE FILTRATION SYSTEM CHECKSAll OKProblems encounteredOperation

Check that the DPF system is working properly, carrying out the

See Test 1080BE PARTICLE FILTER SATURATION CHECK

Move on to Step 3
3INJECTOR HIGH PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation

Check, as instructed in the

See Test 1060OC INJECTOR SEAL TEST

that the diesel leaks from the injector recirculation connections are small (seepage) and roughly equal to one another.

Move on to Step 4Significant leak from one injector

Replace the injector

Op. 1060F10 FUEL INJECTORS - R.R.

4HIGH PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation

Check as described in the

See Test 1060OD Injector high pressure fuel circuit check

that the diesel pressure parameter is correct.

Move on to Step 11Pressure not correctMove on to Step 5
5LOW RETURN PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation

Check as described in the

See Test 1060OA Low pressure fuel return circuit check

that the pressure in the return pipe to the tank is less than 1 bar.

Move on to Step 6Pressure above the maximum limit: return pipe to the tank obstructedRepair the pipe; if necessary, replace it
6LOW SUPPLY PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation

Check as described in the

See Test 1060OB Low pressure fuel supply circuit check

that the diesel pressure between the filter and the pressure pump is between 3.5 and 5 bar.

Move on to Step 7Pressure below the minimum limit or above the maximum limitMove on to Step 10
7LOW SUPPLY PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation

Check by carrying out the

See T CHECK ON CHANGE IN PRESSURE AT THE FUEL FILTER

that the difference in pressure upstream and downstream of the filter is less than 1 bar.

Move on to Step 8Difference in pressure more than 1 bar

Replace the fuel filter

Op. 1044B10 FUEL FILTER ASSEMBLY - R + R OR REPLACE

8LOW SUPPLY PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Check that the supply pump pressure at the filter inlet is between 3.5 and 5 barMove on to Step 9Pressure below 3.5 barMove on to Step 10
9LOW SUPPLY PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Measure the difference in pressure between the electric pump outlet and the filter inlet and check that it is less than 0.3 barMove on to Step 10Difference in pressure more than 0.3 barReplace the pipe
10LOW SUPPLY PRESSURE CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation

Check as described in the

See Test 1040AA CHECK ON SUPPLY VOLTAGE AND CURRENT UPTAKE

that the pump supply voltage is equal to 12V and that the current uptake is between 2 and 10 A

Move on to Step 11Voltage lower than 12 V

Renew electrical wiring
