Air - Bag
A component of the system that did not activate in the event of an accident must be considered still “active”. Therefore, unexploded components that need to be removed from the vehicle (due to defects, end of warranty period or other causes) must be returned to the appropriate centre using the procedure described below.
The fitting and removal of components of the safety system must be carried out EXCLUSIVELY by technical personnel who are part of and authorised for this purpose. Failure to comply with the instructions given below could result in unwanted activation of the system, personal injury or unnecessary repairs to the system. It is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN TO DISASSEMBLE THE AIR BAG MODULES INTO THEIR COMPONENTS.
All system components have been specifically designed to operate in a make and type of car, therefore Air Bags cannot be adapted, reused or installed on other vehicles, but only on those for which they were designed and manufactured.
Any attempt to reuse, adapt or install on a different type of vehicle may cause serious or fatal injuries to the occupants of the vehicle in the event of an accident.
Work on system components
At the end of any work on the system, it must be checked using EXAMINER or other diagnostic tools.
AIR BAG MODULE REPLACEMENT
(DUE TO DEFECTS OR END OF WARRANTY PERIOD)
In the event of replacing an Air Bag module due to a defect or at the end of the warranty period, it is necessary to:
- Remove the removable part of the adhesive label from the new module and place it in a specific file, recording the vehicle details (model, registration data, chassis number) and the serial number of the old control unit. The file must be kept for possible checks.
- A new adhesive plate is supplied with the module to be stuck over the existing one. However, before doing so, perforate it corresponding to the month and 14 years after the year in which the module is fitted (e.g. 2003 corresponds to 2017).
CONTROL UNIT REPLACEMENT
The electronic control unit must ALWAYS be replaced in the event of a collision causing the system to activate.
Even when replacing the control unit, the removable part of the adhesive label must be removed and applied to the specific file mentioned above.
SPIRAL CONTACT REPLACEMENT
A device at the “spiral contact” allows the connecting cables of the Air Bag module – installed on the steering wheel – to follow its rotation without risk of breakage.
A particular internal safety device automatically blocks the relative rotation of the two plates when the spiral contact is removed along with the steering wheel. This prevents the upper plate, no longer connected to the steering wheel, from rotating freely, causing the spiral of the contact to unwind or wind up, potentially leading to its breakage. The new device is nevertheless supplied with a safety key.
In procedures and operations where it is necessary to remove the spiral cable, observe the following:
- always operate with wheels aligned in a straight-ahead position;
- secure the cable with a tie before removing it from the steering wheel.
