PROTECTION OF REPAIRED PARTS

To avoid any future problems, it is important after the replacement or repair of a bodywork component, to reconstruct the correct protection, both inside and outside, in order to obtain the same characteristics as the original characteristics and to ensure the quality and guarantee of the repair against corrosion. The new parts are treated with the same cycle as the body shell.

To maintain the original anti-corrosion qualitites, these parts should only be rubbed down if strictly necessary.

PREPARATION AND PAINTING PROCEDURE

  1. Preparation with abrasive paper P100, dry, on welded or repaired areas.
The purpose of this operation is to remove any layers of paint which may be slightly loose and to smooth off any irregularities in thickness or "stepping".
  2. Sanding the new part and surrounding paintwork with P320 abrasive paper dry.
It is sufficient to "cloud" the new part or smoothe down any imperfections, sagging, clots and scratches, where possible without removing the original treatment.
  3. Blow thoroughly with compressed air and wash with solvent as dust will seriously impair the adhesion of the products to be applied.
  4. Phosphating: apply a phosphating anti-corrosion product on the stripped parts, for example by using a brush. In addition to preventing corrosion, these will improve the adhesion of the subsequent products
  5. Finish with metal filler to touch up and eliminate rippling and/or hollows in the welded or repaired panels.
Polyester filler should be applied with a spatula in appropriate thicknesses in one or several coats. Make sure to avoid excessive catalysis, which could show as yellow marks on the final paintwork, due to the peroxide.
  6. Dry sand with P 80-100 paper.
Remove the surplus filler either by hand, using rubber or wood blocks, or by sanding machines. Sanding must be done carefully, especially in the areas adjoining the surrounding paintwork, to avoid rough scratches. Any touching up of rippling, furrows, pores, etc. should be done now with the same filler to avoid subsequent interventions. Finish with a finer sand paper (P320).
Blow with compressed air and degrease thoroughly.
  7. Finishing primer (two components).
Protect the parts not involved in the application of the primer. The finishing primer must be applied closely following the manufacturer's instructions. A very fine coat of black paint, hand sprayed applied on the primer will act as a telltale and will highlight imperfections during sanding, which can then be eliminated.
  8. Sanding with P500-P600 abrasive paper, dry or with water.
  9. Blowing-degreasing.
(Dust and moisture will impair the adhesion of the paint products.)
