If tapered roller bearing is renewed, install new shims of the same thickness as the old ones.

1 - Tapered roller bearing outer race
q   For output shaft for 1st and 2nd gear
q   Removing and installing → Item
q   If replaced: install a shim → Item of the same thickness
2 - Shim
q   For output shaft for 1st and 2nd gear
q   Note thickness
q   Will be damaged when removed; renew
3 - Oil deflector ring
q   Installation position: the rebate of the hole must face towards the output shaft
4 - Tapered roller bearing outer race
q   For output shaft for 3rd and 4th gear
q   Removing and installing → Item
q   If replaced: install a shim → Item of the same thickness
5 - Shim
q   For output shaft for 3rd and 4th gear
q   Note thickness
q   Will be damaged when removed; renew
6 - Retaining ring
q   Insert in circumferential groove in clutch housing
7 - Cylindrical roller bearing
q   For input shaft
q   Removing and installing → Item
8 - Bearing bush
q   For selector rod
q   Pulling off → Fig.
q   Installing → Fig.
9 - Dowel sleeves
q   2 off
10 - Clutch housing
11 - Input shaft seal
q   Replace → Chapter
q   When gearbox is dismantled, oil seal can be removed with extractor lever -VW 681-
12 - Seal
q   For front-wheel drive: replace with installed gearbox → Chapter
q   For all-wheel drive: replace with installed gearbox → Chapter
13 - Dished washer
q   For the differential
q   Installation position: the interior diameter rebate should point towards the seal → Item
14 - Shim
q   For the differential
q   Adjusting differential → Chapter
15 - Tapered roller bearing outer race
q   For the differential
q   Removing and installing → Item
q   If replaced: install a shim → Item of the same thickness
16 - Oil deflector ring
q   Installation position: the rebate of the hole must face towards the output shaft
17 - Shim
q   For reverse gear output shaft
q   Note thickness
18 - Tapered roller bearing outer race
q   For reverse gear output shaft
q   Removing and installing → Item
q   If replaced: install a shim → Item of the same thickness
