FRONT SUSPENSION NOISE (CREAKING/SQUEAKING)
Whilst driving, especially on unmade roads, there is creaking coming from the front suspension. This diagnosis can only be made after
See table S015 NOISE WHILST DRIVING
Carry out the latter first.
If the problem is only on one side, carry out the checks and any operations on the appropriate side only.
| TEST RESULTS | ||||
| 0 | PRELIMINARY CHECKS | ALL OK | PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED | ACTION |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Having carried out the road test See table S015 NOISE WHILST DRIVING there was a creaking noise from the front. Continue depending on the circumstances in which the noise occurs. | End of diagnosis | 1. The noise is noticeable during steering, even with the vehicle stationary 2. The noise only occurs whilst moving | 1. Move on to Step 1 2. Move on to Step 2 | |
| 1 | MC PHERSON MOVING ELEMENTS CHECK | ALL OK | PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED | ACTION |
| Check that the noise is not caused by the movement of the shock absorber buffer plate (visible from the engine compartment side) | End of diagnosis | 1. The buffer plate is loose 2. There is contact between the rubber part of the plate and the bodyshell. | 1. Tighten the upper nut to torque so that the buffer plate does not move any more. 2.Place a shim no larger than 2.5 mm in between. | |
| 2 | DUST COVER CHECK | ALL OK | PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED | ACTION |
| Check that the dust cover is not rubbing against the shock absorber casing, by moving it and applying pressure and releasing it above the shock absorber casing | Move on to Step 3 | There is rubbing | Replace the end of travel buffer connected to the dust cover | |
| 3 | END OF TRAVEL BUFFER CHECK | ALL OK | PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED | ACTION |
Check that the end of travel buffer is correctly inserted in its housing See Test 4410AA CHECK ON CORRECT FITTING OF END OF TRAVEL BUFFER ON FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER | Move on to Step 4 | End of travel buffer not correctly inserted. | Refit the buffer correctly. | |
| 4 | CHECKS IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT | ALL OK | PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED | ACTION |
| Check that there are no pipes, cables or shields that could cause interference when the engine moves | Move on to Step 5 | Components incorrectly positioned | Reposition the components correctly | |
| 5 | CHECKS UNDER THE FLOOR | ALL OK | PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED | ACTION |
Position the vehicle on a two column lift and raise it. Check that there are no pipes or heat shields under the floor that are producing noise | Move on to Step 6 | Pipes or heat shields incorrectly fastened | Restore the correct fastening | |
| 6 | REAR THRUST BUSH CHECK | ALL OK | PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED | ACTION |
| Check that there are no signs of wear/tears in the rear rubber bush | Move on to Step 7 | There are signs of wear/tears | Replace the track control arm | |
| 7 | ANTI-ROLL BAR CHECKS | ALL OK | PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED | ACTION |
Check that there are no faults with the anti-roll bar See Test 4410CA CHECKS ON FRONT ANTI-ROLL BAR Specifically: - Anti-roll bar correctly positioned in relation to the centre-line of the vehicle - Paint not worn at the points where the bar and the track control arms come into contact. - Condition of flexible mounting in the contact area with the bar and the connecting rod joints. - Fastenings tightened to torque between bar and crossmember - Fastenings to torque between bar and shock absorber connecting rod. | Move on to Step 8 | 1. Torque tightenings not correct. 2. Incorrect positioning of bar in relation to vehicle centre line. 3. Paint worn at the contact points (rubbing between anti-roll bar and crossmember and anti-roll bar and track control arm). 4. Signs of tearing or damage to the flexible mountings. 5. Signs of tearing at the track rod end boots or loose connecting rod not moving smoothly. | 1. Restore the correct tightness 2. Replace the anti-roll bar Op. 4410C10 FRONT SUSPENSION ANTI-ROLL BAR - R+R - CHECK WHEEL GEOMETRY SEPARATELY 3. Replace the anti-roll bar Op. 4410C10 FRONT SUSPENSION ANTI-ROLL BAR - R+R - CHECK WHEEL GEOMETRY SEPARATELY 4. Replace the anti-roll bar Op. 4410C10 FRONT SUSPENSION ANTI-ROLL BAR - R+R - CHECK WHEEL GEOMETRY SEPARATELY 5. Replace the connecting rod Op. 4410C12 FRONT SUSPENSION ANTI ROLL BAR JOINT (END) (ONE), LH OR RH - R.R | |
| 8 | SPRING/SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY CHECK | ALL OK | PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED | ACTION |
Check that the mountings fastening the suspension to the bodyshell (at the shock absorber turrets) do not show signs of wear on account of rubbing. The shock absorber must be removed for this check Also check that the positioning and the fitting of the semi-corner assembly (spring-shock absorber assembly). See Test 4410AE CHECK ON CORRECT ADJUSTMENT OF THE SHOCK ABSORBER/SPRING ASSEMBLY Check the condition of the spring lower seal and the rubber coating for the upper shim. Check that there are no signs of rubbing on the suspension spring at its supports. Also check that the spring shows no signs of wear | End of diagnosis | 1. Semi corner units incorrectly positioned or fitted. 2. Signs of tearing on the rubberized plate. 3. Spring worn. 4. Check the condition of the paint on the top part of the plate. | 1. Restore the correct fitting/positioning of the components 2. Replace the components making sure that they are correctly position (spring in contact with the lower plate projection). 3. Replace the shock absorber spring and the lower seal if damaged. 4. Only replace the shock absorber if there is obvious abrasion | |
