FRONT SUSPENSION NOISE (KNOCKING)
Whilst driving, especially on unmade roads, there is knocking coming from the front suspension. This diagnosis can only be made after
See table S015 NOISE WHILST DRIVING
Carry out the latter first.
If the problem is only on one side, carry out the checks and any operations on the appropriate side only.

|---|---|---|---|---|
Having carried out the road test See table S015 NOISE WHILST DRIVING there was a knocking noise from the front. Continue depending on the circumstances in which the noise occurs. | End of diagnosis | 1. The noise disappears when the brake pedal is operated 2. The noise occurs whilst accelerating or braking with the wheels steered. 3. The noise only occurs during acceleration or braking 4. The noise is also present in other conditions. | 1. Restore the correct tightening of the front brake calipers to the steering knuckle. 2. Replace the wheel bearing on the side where the fault occurred Op. 4450C32 ONE FRONT WHEEL HUB BEARING, LH OR RH - REPLACE fitting it with the magnetic track facing the steering knuckle seal This bearing is used by the ABS active sensors to calculate the wheel speed. It should NEVER come into contact with metal shavings or magnetic components (screwdrivers, etc.) because they could alter the gap or damage the codifier and prevent a correct reading from the sensor. 3. Move on to Step 1 4. Move on to Step 1 | |
| 1 | MC PHERSON MOVING ELEMENTS CHECK | ALL OK | PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED | ACTION |
| Check that the noise is not caused by the movement of the shock absorber buffer plate (visible from the engine compartment side) | Move on to Step 2 | 1. The buffer plate is loose 2. There is contact between the rubber part of the plate and the bodyshell. | 1. Tighten the upper nut to torque so that the buffer plate does not move any more. 2. Place a shim no larger than 2.5 mm in between. | |
| 2 | OIL LEAKS CHECK | ALL OK | PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED | ACTION |
Raise the vehicle on a two column lift and check that there are no oil leaks from the shock absorber stem. Slight dampness on the stem is considered normal because there is evaporation during the operation of the shock absorber. If there is a persistent oil leak on the shock absorber stem, make sure that it is not coming from other parts of the vehicle that are lubricated | Move on to Step 3 | 1. Leaks from other parts that are lubricated 2. Leaks from the shock absorber stem. | 1. Search for the cause of the leak following the appropriate diagnostic procedure. 2. Replace the shock absorber | |
| 3 | INTERFERENCE CHECK | ALL OK | PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED | ACTION |
Check that there are no signs of interference between the suspension elements or between the latter and the bodyshell. In particular, check that there are no signs of wear on the suspension springs and that they do not show signs of abrasion. If the spring shows signs of abrasion, its mechanical properties could be weakened as a result of oxidation. | Move on to Step 4 | 1. Inteference due to incorrect fitting. 2. Abrasions or non conformity of the spring. | 1. Eliminate the interference and restore the correct fastening. If this is not possible, replace the defective components. 2. Replace the spring taking care to fit it correctly. | |
| 4 | TRACK CONTROL ARM CHECK | ALL OK | PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED | ACTION |
Check that there is no clearance between track control arm track rod ends and make sure that the boot is intact. In order to do so the guard under the engine must be removed Op. 7055B54 UNDER ENGINE PROTECTION/GUARD - R.R. then loosen the bolt connecting the track control arm to the front steering knuckle. Also check the condition of the suspension bushes. | Move on to Step 5 | There is clearance or the boot or the bushes are not intact. | Replace the track control arm | |
| 5 | REAR THRUST BUSH CHECK | ALL OK | PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED | ACTION |
| Check that there are no signs of wear/tears in the rear rubber bush. | Move on to Step 5 | There are signs of wear/tears | Replace the track control arm | |
| 6 | TIGHTENING TORQUE CHECK | ALL OK | PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED | ACTION |
For 1.4 16V versions: Locate the area of the possible noise source: top or bottom. Starting from the area where the knocking was identified, check See Test 4410OA CHECKS ON CORRECT TIGHTENINGS FOR FRONT SUSPENSION the tightening torques of the fixing bolts for: - shock absorber stem to mounting on turret; - steering knuckle to shock absorber bracket; - steering box to the crossmember; - steering rod to the steering knuckle; - the anti-roll bar to the crossmember; - the connecting rod to the shock absorber; - the connecting rod to the bar; - the front bush to the track control arm; - the rear bush to the track control arm; - the track rod end to the steering knuckle; - fastenings securing crossmember bracket to body side member; - rear fastenings securing crossmember to bodyshell; - fastening securing band to crossmember; - fastening for front brake caliper; - engine connecting rod fastenings to crossmember For 1.9 JTD 8V and 16V versions: Locate the area of the possible noise source: top or bottom. Starting from the area where the knocking was identified, check See Test 4410OA CHECKS ON CORRECT TIGHTENINGS FOR FRONT SUSPENSION the tightening torques of the fixing bolts for: - shock absorber stem to mounting on turret; - steering knuckle to shock absorber bracket; - steering box to the crossmember; - steering rod to the steering knuckle; - the anti-roll bar to the crossmember; - the connecting rod to the shock absorber; - the connecting rod to the bar; - the front bush to the track control arm; - the rear bush to the track control arm; - the track rod end to the steering knuckle; - fastenings securing crossmember bracket to body side member; - rear fastenings securing crossmember to bodyshell; - fastening securing band to crossmember; - fastening for front brake caliper; - engine connecting rod fastenings to crossmember. | Move on to Step 7 | Torque tightenings not correct. | Restore the correct tightening. | |
| 7 | CORRECT OPERATION CHECK | ALL OK | PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED | ACTION |
| Check that the fault is no longer present. | End of diagnosis | The fault persists. | The fault is due to another system (engine, clutch, gearbox, differential). Search for the cause in one of these systems, following the appropriate diagnostic procedures. | |
