DIFFERENTIAL RH OIL SEAL - ’L’ SERIES

Service repair no - 54.10.21

Remove

  1. Remove RH drive shaft. See DRIVE SHAFTS, Repairs.
  2. Carefully prise out oil seal from differential housing.

NOTE: Two types of oil seal have been fitted to the differential of the PG1 gearbox, retain seal removed for reference when selecting new seals.

Refit

Differential rh oil seal - ’l’ series – Carefully prise out oil seal from differential housing.

’A’ - original oil seal ’B’ - later type oil seal

NOTE: The differential oil seals have been modified on later type gearboxes. The seals are identified above and the later type gearboxes can be identified by machined seal location faces. The two types of seal are not interchangeable.

’a’ - original oil seal ’b’ - later type oil seal – Carefully prise out oil seal from differential housing.
  1. The drive shaft inboard joint has also been modified for use with the modified oil seal. The modified drive shaft is identified by a groove ’A’ above which indicates that additional oil seal clearance has been added at ’B’ above. Modified drive shafts can be used with either oil seal type but later type oil seal CANNOT be used with the original type drive shafts.

CAUTION: Do not fit a modified oil seal when early type drive shafts are fitted, as the drive shaft circlip will not engage in the differential.

  1. Thoroughly clean oil seal recess and splines of drive shaft.
  2. Lubricate original type oil seal with new gearbox oil.

CAUTION: Modified type oil seal is waxed and MUST NOT be lubricated before fitment.
