Self – diagnosis Procedures

The self – diagnostic function of the SRS system allows it to locate the cause of a system problem(s) and store this information in its memory. This data can be retrieved via the data link circuit.

  • When the ignition switch is turned ON (II), the SRS indicator light comes on and goes off after about 6 seconds, the system is normal.
  • If there is an abnormality; the system locates and defines the problem, stores this information in its memory and the SRS indicator light is turned on.

Note: The data remains in the memory even when the ignition is switched off and even when the battery is disconnected.

  • When the short connector is connected to the service check connector and the ignition is switched ON (II), the SRS indicator light will give a number of blinks corresponding to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)
  • After reading and recording the DTC, proceed with the trouble shooting for that code.

ALWAYS Observe the following precautions before Fault Finding on the SRS system:

  • Only use a digital circuit tester to check the system, maximum output 10mA (0.01A) when switched to smallest value. The use of a higher output tester could damage the airbag circuit or cause accidental airbag deployment and possible injury.
  • Whenever the ignition is switched ON (II), be careful not to bump the SRS unit; the airbags could accidentally deploy and cause damage or injury.
  • Before removing the SRS main harness, connect the short connectors (RED) to the airbag connectors.
  • A tester probe must not be inserted into the terminals in the SRS unit or harness connectors and do not connect the terminals with a jumper wire. Use only the test harness and the short connectors.
  • Ensure the battery is sufficiently charged. If the battery is dead or low, or the back – up power in the SRS unit is faulty, measuring values will not be correct.
