REAR NOISE (WHISTLING/HUMMING)

Whilst driving, especially on unmade roads, there is a whistling noise coming from the rear suspension. This diagnosis can only be made after diagnosis

See table S015 NOISE WHILST DRIVING

Carry out the latter first.

If the problem is only on one side, carry out the checks and any operations on the appropriate side only.

0PRELIMINARY CHECKSAll OKProblems encounteredOperation

After carrying out a road test during the diagnosis, a noise is heard from the rear identifiable as whistling/blowing.

See table S015 NOISE WHILST DRIVING

Continue depending on the circumstances in which the noise occurs.

End of diagnosis

1. The noise increases when cornering

2. The noise increases in vertical oscillation conditions

1. Replace the wheel bearing complete with hub on the side where the fault occurred

Op. 4450D10 HUB FOR ONE REAR WHEEL, L/H OR R/H - R+R WITH WHEEL REMOVED - CHECK WHEEL GEOMETRY SEPARATELY

2. Move on to Step 1

1REAR BRAKE CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation

For 1.9 JTD;

Remove the wheel and visually inspect the clearance between the brake disc and the guard

Op. 4450B13 REAR WHEELS (TWO) - R.R

Move on to Step 2

1. Guard distorted

2. Contact between guard and disc

1. Restore the correct gap, if necessary replace the guard

Op. 3310B59 REAR BRAKE DISC GUARD (ONE), LEFT OR RIGHT - R.R.

2. Replace the brake disc, if the noise persists replace the wheel bearing

Op. 3310B48 REAR BRAKE DISC (ONE), LEFT OR RIGHT - R.R.

Op. 4450D10 HUB FOR ONE REAR WHEEL, L/H OR R/H - R+R WITH WHEEL REMOVED - CHECK WHEEL GEOMETRY SEPARATELY

1REAR BRAKE CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation

For 1.2 8v, 1.4 8v, 1.3 JTD;

When the wheel is removed, check the condition of the rear drum brake linings

Op. 4450B13 REAR WHEELS (TWO) - R.R

Move on to Step 2Brake linings wornReplacement of worn brake linings
2SHOCK ABSORBER STEM CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation

Remove the left and/or right wheel.

Op. 4450B06 LEFT REAR WHEEL - R.R

Op. 4450B08 RIGHT REAR WHEEL - R.R

Check that the noise is not due to irregular friction between the shock absorber stem and the gasket, checking the condition (scoring/contact marks) of the stem chrome surface.

End of diagnosisThere is irregular friction

Lubricate the stem raising the dust cover with a layer of silicon grease.

If the noise persists, replace the shock absorber

Op. 4420A30 REAR SUSPENSION SHOCK ABSORBER (ONE), LEFT OR RIGHT - R.R. - CHECK WHEEL GEOMETRY SEPARATELY
