Note: For proper inspection/adjustment of the wheel alignment, check and adjust the following before checking the alignment.
- Check that the suspension is not modified.
- Check the tyre size and tyre pressure.
- Check the runout of the wheels and tyres.
- Check the suspension ball joints.
Adjustment procedure
Each of the wheel alignment elements relates to the other. Therefore, the total adjustment of the front/rear wheel alignment is required whenever either one of the elements (i.e. caster, toe, and/or turning angle) is adjusted.
- Adjust caster
- Adjust toe
- Adjust turning angle
- Check camber
- Readjust caster
- Readjust toe
- Readjust turning angle
Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint Checking Procedure
With the suspension fully extended (i.e. front wheels off the ground), place a lever of up to 1000mm in length between the tyre and the floor/ramp. Apply a force using the lever just sufficient to lift the weight of the wheel/hub assembly. Check for freeplay or looseness in the lower ball joint. This can best be detected as shown in the illustration above. No free play or looseness should be evident. If freeplay or looseness is present replace the ball joint using the service tools specified.
