Replacing a pretensioner

If you are replacing an inactivated pretensioner (faulty or expired - see adhesive label) check the second safety device is correctly engaged. When handling a pretensioner, do not hold it from the belt to avoid damaging it.

Replacing the ECU

The ECU MUST be replaced after an impact which triggered the entire system (driver and passenger's airbags).
When replacing a ECU, remove the removable part of the adhesive label and file it in the ledger.

Replacing the clock contact

The clock contact connecting the driver's airbag is equipped with a device which locks it automatically when the steering wheel is removed. This device stops the upper plate from turning if it is removed from the steering wheel. Otherwise, the wire coils could come underdone and the wires could be broken. The device is automatically locked when the steering wheel is assembled:

  • If the clock wire is removed and refitted, check that is fits back onto the steering wheel stalk in the same position.
  • If, for any reason, the upper plate of the clock wire should rotate and not recognise its original position, the clock wire MUST BE REPLACED.
  • When replacing the clock wire (if it is supplied separate from the steering wheel stalk), the vehicle wheels must be straight (this is the position of the new device). The new device is equipped with a safety tag which keeps it locked. Remove the tag before installed the device to the steering wheel to ensure correct operation.

Interventions after an accident

Any components of the system which appear damaged following an accident MUST be replaced. Do not attempt to repair the ECU, the clock contact, the airbag units or the pretensioners.

Accidents with or without airbag or pretensioner triggering

Inspect the system components after an accident, regardless of whether the impact triggered the system or not.
If distortions, breakages or flexions in components or anchoring points are noted, replace the corresponding components.

Accidents triggering airbags or pretensioners

Components triggered all or in part by a frontal impact are to be replaced.
In the event of partial triggering (pretensioner only), replace this component only.
In the event of total triggering (airbags and pretensioners) replace the following components:

  • Airbag units
  • Pretensioners and seat belts (including the buckle section to the seat)
  • ECU

Inspect wiring and connector for burns, sheath melting or damage due to excessive heat.
If any damage is found on inactivated system components, including the clock contact and the wiring interconnecting the components, REPLACE the damaged parts.

Paint work

There are no special safety precautions to follow for paint work and oven drying as the system components were designed not to be damaged if the external surfaces of the vehicle are heated with normal drying devices.
The devices, however, can stand temperatures up to 95°C.
Never use naked flames near the system components.

Health hazard

The precautions to be observed when handling the Airbag modules or triggered pretensioners are the following: use polythene protective gloves and safety goggles, after touching activated units, wash your hands and exposed parts of the body with soap and water.
