Results of the tests
0PRELIMINARY CHECKSAll OKProblems metOperation
Visually check on the instrument panel that the I.E. fault warning light is not flashing while the car is drivingContinue to Step 1I.E. fault warning light flashingSee table K48
1CHECK ERRORAll OKProblems metOperation

Connect the diagnostic equipment (Examiner or Examiner Plus) and transcribe the errors and environmental parameters.

Check for '(General) Misfire' error only

Continue to Step 2'Upstream lambda probe' error presentSee table Z56
'Mixture concentration' error presentSee table Z50
The 'Misifre in cylinder X error is presentSee table Z54
The '(General) Misfire', 'Catalyzer and/or 'Downstream Lambda signal' errors only are presentContinue to Step 2
Other errors present

Identify and eliminate the cause of the anomaly.

Continue to Step 12

2CONTROL UNIT CIRCUIT CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation

Visually inspect the condition of the engine management control unit wiring, connections and earth.

No faults should be present

Continue to Step 3Faults in the control unit electrical circuit

Restore the correct connections See E5030 PETROL ENGINE ELECTRONIC MANAGEMENT. If necessary, replace the components involved.

Continue to Step 12

Restore the correct pressure; if necessary, replace the faulty component.

Continue to Step 12

4CHECKING FUEL QUALITYAll OKProblems metOperation

1.6 16v

2.4 20v

Check the quality of the fuel, making sure that there is no water or other impuritiesContinue to Step 5Impurities are present

Clean the tank Op. 1040A24and introduce new fuel.

Continue to Step 12

1.2 16v

1.8 16v

Check the quality of the fuel, making sure that there is no water or other impuritiesContinue to Step 6Impurities are present

Clean the tank Op. 1040A24and introduce new fuel.

Continue to Step 12

5CHECKING SIGNAL PLAUSIBILITYAll OKProblems metOperation
1.6 16vChecking plausibility of the MAP/debimeter sensor signal.Continue to Step 6The signal is not plausible

Replace the pressure sensor Op. 1056B54

Continue to Step 12

2.4 20vChecking plausibility of the MAP/debimeter sensor signal.Continue to Step 6The signal is not plausible

Replace the flowmeter Op. 1056B12

Continue to Step 12

6CHECKING INLET AND EXHAUST SYSTEM SEALAll OKProblems metOperation

Check the exhaust system visually and by listening. In particular, check that there are no leaks downstream of the MAP/flow meter sensor, also taking into consideration:

  • blow-by;
  • canister circuit;
  • brake servo vacuum pipes;
  • Injector O-Rings
Continue to Step 7Leaks are present

Restore the exhaust system seal and replace the affected parts if necessary

Continue to Step 12

7ENGINE PROBLEMS CHECKAll OKProblems metOperation
1.6 16v

Check that there are no problems with the engine. In particular, check:

  • cylinder compression correct Op. 0510A10;
  • correct engine timing Op. 0510A20;
  • correct rpm sensor position
  • gap between rpm sensor and phonic wheel within permitted limits;
  • visually for absence of faults on phonic wheel, such as broken or chipped teeth
Continue to Step 9Engine timing incorrect

Ensure engine timing is correct Op. 1032B10

Continue to Step 8

Engine timing incorrect

Reposition the sensor correctly.

Continue to Step 8

Engine timing incorrect

Replace the flywheel Op. 1024A28

Continue to Step 8

Engine timing incorrectContinue to Step 9

1.2 16v

1.8 16v

2.4 20v

Check that there are no problems with the engine. In particular, check:

  • cylinder compression correct Op. 0510A10;
  • correct engine timing Op. 0510A20;
  • correct rpm sensor position
  • gap between rpm sensor and phonic wheel within permitted limits;
  • visually for absence of faults on phonic wheel, such as broken or chipped teeth
Continue to Step 9Engine timing incorrect

Ensure engine timing is correct Op. 1032B10

Continue to Step 12

Rpm sensor incorrectly positioned

Reposition the sensor correctly.

Continue to Step 12

Flywheel defective

Replace the flywheel Op. 1024A28

Continue to Step 12

Compression insufficientContinue to Step 9
8FLYWHEEL LEARNINGAll OKProblems metOperation
1.6 16vCarry out the flywheel learning procedure.Continue to Step 12
9CHECKING CAUSE OF INSUFFICIENT COMPRESSIONAll OKProblems metOperation
1.6 16v

Carry out R/R on head to check the valve seal

Check the condition of the cylinders/piston rings

Continue to Step 10Insufficient valve seal

Overhaul the cylinder head Op. 1016E10

Continue to Step 8
