Diagram showing two seat belt pretensioner units with an arrow indicating the direction of pull

The front seat belts are fitted with belt pretensioners. In the event of a serious frontal impact, the pretensioners will pull the seat belt buckles down (towards the floor), thereby reducing any slack in both the lap and diagonal belts.

Note: The seat belt pretensioners will NOT be activated by rear, side or minor frontal impacts.

The belt pretensioners will only activate once and MUST THEN BE REPLACED. Failure to replace the pretensioners will reduce the efficiency of the car's front restraint systems.

Important Information
If the pretensioners have been activated, the seat belts will still function as restraints, and must be worn while the car is being driven to a Rover dealer for repair.

WARNING: After an impact always check the seat belts and pretensioners and, if necessary, replace.

In the interests of safety, it is recommended that the front seats and seat belts should only be removed or replaced in accordance with the service instructions, and observing the following precautions:

  • ALWAYS ensure the red service key is inserted into the slot on pretensioner before removing the seat or pretensioner.
  • DO NOT remove the service key unless the pretensioner is correctly fitted in the vehicle.
  • The pretensioner unit is a shock sensitive device and must be handled with extreme care. NEVER install a pretensioner that has been dropped.
  • DO NOT try to disassemble the pretensioner unit, it has no serviceable parts. Any tampering with the pretensioner unit could cause the pretensioner to fire, resulting in serious personal injury.
  • Always carry the pretensioner assembly in two hands and NEVER by one tube or by the cable.
  • DO NOT slide the seat assembly along the floor or mishandle the seat with a pretensioner fitted.
  • Always remove the service key and fit cover before the vehicle leaves the workshop. Failure to do this will prevent the pretensioners from activating reducing the efficiency of the car's front restraint systems.

  1. Remove front seat, see Front seat with pretensioner.
