FRONT SUSPENSION NOISE (CREAKING/SQUEAKING)

1.2 8v, 1.3 Multijet, 1.4 16v

Whilst driving, especially on unmade roads, there is creaking coming from the front suspension. This diagnosis can only be made after

See table S015 NOISE WHILST DRIVING

Carry out the latter first.

If the problem is only on one side, carry out the checks and any operations on the appropriate side only.

0PRELIMINARY CHECKSAll OKProblems encounteredOperation

Having carried out the road test, during the

See table S015 NOISE WHILST DRIVING

, there was a creaking noise from the front.

Continue depending on the circumstances in which the noise occurs.

End of diagnosis

1. The noise is noticeable during steering, even with the vehicle stationary

2. The noise only occurs whilst moving

1. Move on to Step 1

2. Move on to Step 2

1MC PHERSON MOVING ELEMENTS CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Check that the noise is not caused by the movement of the shock absorber buffer plate (visible from the engine compartment side)End of diagnosis

1.The buffer plate is loose

2. There is contact between the rubber part of the plate and the bodyshell.

1. Tighten the upper nut to torque so that the buffer plate does not move any more.

2. Place a shim no larger than 2 mm in between.

2DUST COVER CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Check that the dust cover is not rubbing against the shock absorber casing, by moving it and applying pressure and releasing it above the shock absorber casingMove on to Step 3There is rubbing

3END OF TRAVEL BUFFER CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation

Check that the end of travel buffer is correctly inserted in its housing by carrying out

See Test 4410AA CHECK ON CORRECT FITTING OF END OF TRAVEL BUFFER ON FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER

Move on to Step 4End of travel buffer not correctly inserted.Refit the buffer correctly
4CHECKS IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENTAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Check that there are no pipes, cables or shields that could cause interference when the engine moves.Move on to Step 5Components incorrectly positionedReposition the components correctly
5CHECKS UNDER THE FLOORAll OKProblems encounteredOperation

Position the vehicle on a two column lift and raise it.

Check that there are no pipes or heat shields under the floor that are producing noise

Move on to Step 6Pipes or heat shields incorrectly fastenedRestore the correct fastening
6THRUST BUSHES CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation
Check that there are no signs of rubbing between the bushes and their seatsMove on to Step 7Signs of rubbing detected

Lubricate the elements with silicon grease

"The use of unsuitable lubricants can adversely affect the operation of the component".

7ANTI-ROLL BAR CHECKSAll OKProblems encounteredOperation

Check that there are no faults with the anti-roll bar by carrying out the

See Test 4410CA FRONT ANTI-ROLL BAR CHECKS

Specifically:

  • Anti-roll bar correctly positioned in relation to the centre-line of the vehicle
  • Paint not worn at the points where the bar and the track control arms come into contact.
  • Condition of centre flexible mountings in the contact area with the bar
  • Fastenings tightened to torque between bar and crossmember.
  • Fastenings to torque between bar and shock absorber connecting rod.

After disconnecting the upper ball joint of the shock absorber connection rod, also check that the antiroll bar does not show signs of squeaking/creaking in the central flexible blocks upon manual movement when a symmetrical load is applied.

Move on to Step 8

1. Torque tightenings not correct

2. Bar not correctly positioned.

3. Paint worn at the contact points (rubbing between anti-roll bar and crossmember and anti-roll bar and track control arm).

4. Signs of tearing or damage to the flexible mountings in the centre of the bar.

5. Signs of tearing at the track rod end boots or loose connecting rod not moving smoothly.

6. Creaking of the bar centre flexible mountings during manual movement with a symmetrical load applied.

1. Restore the correct tightness

2. Replace the anti-roll bar

3. Replace the anti-roll bar

Op. 4410C10 FRONT SUSPENSION ANTI-ROLL BAR - R+R - CHECK WHEEL GEOMETRY SEPARATELY

4. Replace the middle flexible mountings for anti-roll bar.

5. Replace the connecting rod

8SPRING/SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY CHECKAll OKProblems encounteredOperation

Check that the mountings fastening the suspension to the bodyshell (at the shock absorber turrets) do not show signs of wear on account of rubbing.

The shock absorber must be removed for this check

Op. 4410A12 FRONT SUSPENSION DAMPER (ONE), LH OR RH - FOR MCPHERSON STRUT SYSTEM - INCLUDES DISMANTLING/REASSEMBLY OF ASSEMBLY AT BENCH - R.R

Also check that the positioning and the fitting of the semi-corner assembly (spring-shock absorber assembly) is correct.

Check the condition of the spring paint.

If the spring shows signs of abrasion, its mechanical properties could be weakened as a result of oxidation.

End of diagnosis

1. Semi corner units incorrectly positioned or fitted.

2. Spring worn.

1. Restore the correct fitting/positioning of the components

2. Replace the spring

Op. 4410A12 FRONT SUSPENSION DAMPER (ONE), LH OR RH - FOR MCPHERSON STRUT SYSTEM - INCLUDES DISMANTLING/REASSEMBLY OF ASSEMBLY AT BENCH - R.R

The spring-shock absorber assembly should be correctly fitted by positioning the mounting paralle to the brake disc and the tab should be positioned in the opposite direction to the direction of travel of the vehicle.
