55 Electrical equipmentAerial

When an ignition key is inserted in the ignition switch, the transponder is energised by radio waves from the aerial and automatically responds emitting a code.

The RED MASTER key contains the master code and must ONLY be used for the key memorising procedure.

The MASTER key can also perform the functions on the main key. Its use is, however, only recommended in an emergency.

The RED key code is the master code memorised in the engine ECU and in the Fiat CODE ECU. This permanently links the engine ECU to the RED key. The vehicle's owner is invited to attain to the following instructions WITH EXTREME CARE:

  • the RED key is to be stored in a safe place (not in the vehicle);
  • the RED key is to be used only to memorise new keys;
  • the CODE Card containing the secret code must not be left in the vehicle to prevent theft. It must, however, be readily available for emergency starting procedures;
  • the RED key is the symbol of vehicle ownership. If the car is sold, the RED key and the Code Card must be handed over to the new owner.

The keys are memorised at the production plant. Therefore, when a new vehicle is delivered to the customer, no memorising procedures are required. If keys are lost or copies are required, order from Fiat Ricambi Volvera.

If the RED key is damaged or lost, new keys cannot be memorised. If the Fiat CODE were to break down, both the engine and the CODE ECU's will need to be replaced without the RED key.

Aerial

The aerial has the following purposes:

  • power the transponder to send the code;
  • receive the code from the Transponder and send it to the Fiat CODE ECU.

As the aerial needs to be close to the transponder (electromagnetic immunity, limited transponder range) it is fitted coaxially to the ignition switch.
