55 Electrical equipmentEmergency starting procedure

When the ignition key is turned to MAR, the warning light can signal one of the following situations:

  • on briefly for 0.7 seconds only:
    key recognised, correct system operation;
  • on fixed, the ECU has detected one of the following errors:
    key not recognised by the CODE ECU;
    serial line between CODE and engine ECU's not connected or dialogue between ECU's failed; key memorisation procedure not performed (new ECU taken from RICAMBI).

EMERGENCY STARTING PROCEDURE

The emergency starting procedure allows to start the engine in the event of a fault in the CODE system (CODE ECU error, faulty Transponder), i.e. if the engine ECU does not receive the ignition enable signal from the CODE ECU.

This operation is useful to start the engine and take the vehicle to a Dealership to be repaired

After an emergency start, the engine ECU will disable engine ignition again if the key is turned to STOP. The procedure will need to be repeated.

The procedure can only be performed with diagnostic tools or by means of the accelerator pedal (for emergencies only).

The emergency code is sent to the injection ECU by pressing the accelerator pedal (throttle position sensor). Perform the following operations in order:

  1. Read the emergency code on the CODE Card.
  2. Turn the key to MAR. Press the accelerator and keep it pressed. The injection failure warning light will come on for 4 seconds, come off for 150 ms, and come on again for 4 seconds.
  3. When the warning light comes off, release the accelerator pedal;
  4. When the pedal is released, the warning light will start flashing (at a frequency of 0.8 Hz).
  5. After the number of flashes which corresponds to the first digit of the code shown on the CODE Card, press the accelerator completely and keep it pressed.
  6. The injection failure warning light will light up again for 4 seconds only to show the first digit has been acquired.
  7. When the warning light goes off, release the accelerator.
  8. When the pedal is released, the warning light will start flashing again (at a frequency of 0.8 Hz).
  9. After a number of flashes which corresponds to the second digit, press the accelerator pedal. The warning light will light up for 4 seconds only to show the second digit has been acquired;
  10. Repeat the sequence for the other emergency code digits;
  11. When the pedal is released after the last digit, the warning light will flash at double frequency (1.6 Hz) to indicate the whole sequence has been acquired. If, on the other hand, the warning light lights up fixed, the code has be rejected.
  12. If the code is accepted, start the engine. If the code is not accepted, turn the key to STOP and repeat the entire operation.

The graphic shows an example of how to operate the pedal and the corresponding flashes of the warning light (example code: 42173).
