Two keys with Transponder are provided.

The Transponder is an electronic device (NOT battery powered) which contains a specific ID code (key-specific and not scrambled). The secret code is linked to the vehicle CODE 2 ECU.

When the key is inserted in the ignition switch, the Transponder is energised by the radio-frequency aerial in the ignition key cylinder. The Transponder automatically responds by emitting a code.

The keys provided are programmed at the production plant.
All the codes are then stored in the database by the Spare Parts Division.
Consequently, no storing procedures are required on behalf of Dealers when a new vehicle is delivered to the customer.
Order new keys (if keys are lost or additional keys are required) from RICAMBI (Spare Parts Division) according to the procedure shown below.

CODE 2 ECU

The main purpose of the Code 2 ECU is to recognise the key in the ignition switch.

The Code 2 ECU also manages key storing procedures and the Code 2 warning light.

The Code 2 ECU contains the secret code used in the communication between the Code 2 ECU and the Transponder in the key, which is carried out via the aerial.

Furthermore, it contains the enabled key codes (ID1 and ID2) and the "FIX CODE" (unscrambled code used in the interface between Code 2 ECU and engine management ECU. The FIX CODE is sent to the engine management ECU when the key is turned to MAR for the first time and the key was recognised.

The Code 2 ECU has a direct diagnostic line which is independent from the engine management ECU line.

The Code 2 ECU and the engine ECU interface via a single wire serial line.

It is a two-way serial line. This means that the data travels sequentially from the engine management ECU to the Code 2 ECU and vice versa.
