The pretensioner becomes operative when installed in a vehicle. The spring is pressed against the riser and releases the second safety device lever. This is pushed by a spring and frees the movement of the deceleration sensor (Armed device).

To remove the pretensioner, loosen the fastening screw to automatically unarm the device. You can check whether the device is armed by checking that the spring is pressing the second safety device against the deceleration sensor.

SECOND SAFETY DEVICE

The second safety device is a mechanism which ensures the pretensioner is triggered only when the seat belt is in use.

The mechanism consists of a lever pressed by a spring against the seat belt coiled on the reel. A tooth on the end of the lever is positioned between deceleration sensor parts (m1) and (m2) thus impeding any movement when the seat belt is all coiled on the reel (seat belt not in use.

When the seat belt coil decreases (seat belt in use), the second safety device is pressed by the spring against the belt and shifts freeing the movement of the deceleration sensor. The pretensioner is now operative.

Two diagrams labeled A and B showing the internal mechanism of the second safety device engaged and disengaged, with callout numbers 1 through 6 identifying levers, springs, and seat belt coils.
