The emergency electronic code is also used for system diagnostics and for other operations with Examiner (or other diagnostic tool). Many of these operations (e.g. storing the keys) can in fact only be carried out after entering the code. Consequently, before any other operation ask the customer for the Code Card.
The Code Card should not be left in the vehicle to prevent theft. At the same time, it should be available for emergency start-ups.
SYSTEM SELF-TEST
The ECU constantly runs a system self-test. In detail:
- it detects and stores faults
- it recognises the various components and detects the type of fault
- it signals the presence of these errors by means of the warning light on the instrument panel.
The Code 2 system has its own diagnostic line. Consequently, the data stored in the ECU can be accessed with Examiner or another diagnostic instrument.
The ECU provides information on:
- the ECU status: indicating whether the ECU is correctly programmed and working, whether it is not working or whether the “key storing” procedure was not carried out (new ECU from Spare Parts Division)
- the Code 2 warning light status: on or off (allowing to identify warning light connection faults)
- the key status (correctly stored or not)
- the number of enabled keys.
The ECU recognises faulty system components:
- Code 2 ECU
- aerial
- Transponder in key
- serial line to engine ECU.
Once the faults have been repaired, the fault records can be deleted from the ECU memory.
Furthermore, the following procedure can be carried out with Examiner:
- Key storing
NOTE: Any keys not including in a new storing procedure will be automatically deleted and can no longer be used.
- Deleting stored keys.
The following operations can be carried out with Examiner only after entering the emergency electronic code shown on the Code Card.
Consequently, ask the customer for the Code Card before starting any operation with Examiner.
Emergency start-up procedure
The emergency start-up procedure allows to start the engine if there is a problem in the Code 2 system (faulty Code 2 ECU, keys not working, etc.), i.e. if the engine management ECU does not receive the ignition enable from the Code 2 ECU.
This operation is used to start the engine and take the vehicle to a Fiat Dealership to repair the fault.
NOTE After an emergency start-up, the engine management ECU will immobilise the engine again when the key is turned to STOP and the procedure will need to be repeated.
This procedure can be carried out with Examiner or (in emergencies only) with the accelerator pedal: The emergency code is sent to the injection ECU by pressing the accelerator pedal (throttle position sensor).
Perform the following operations in sequence:
- Read the emergency code on the Code Card.
- Turn the key to MAR; floor the accelerator pedal and hold it down.
The injection failure warning light will come on for 4 seconds, go out briefly (150 ms.) and light up for other 4 seconds.
- Release the accelerator pedal when the warning light goes out.
- The warning light will go out when the pedal is released (at a frequency of 0.8 Hz).
- After a number of flashes which corresponds to the first digit on the Code Card, floor the accelerator pedal and hold it pressed.
- The injection failure warning light will light up again for 4 seconds to indicate that the first digit has been acquired.
- Release the accelerator pedal when the warning light goes out.
- The warning light will start flashing again as above (at a frequency of 0.8 Hz).
- After a number of flashes corresponding to the second digit, press the accelerator pedal. The warning light will come on for 4 seconds to indicate that the second digit has been acquired.
- Repeat these steps to enter the other emergency code digits.
- When the pedal is released after entering the last digit, the warning light will flash at double frequency (1.6 Hz) to indicate that the entire code has been acquired. If on the other hand the warning light stays on, the code has been refused.
