NOTE: If original belt is being refitted align index wire to lower land of pointer.

CAUTION: Ensure that the pointer approaches the index wire from above. Should pointer go past index wire, release tension completely and repeat tensioning procedure.

  1. Ensuring that the pointer maintains correct position, tighten tensioner bolt to 25 Nm.
  2. Using crankshaft pulley bolt, rotate crankshaft 2 turns and align camshaft gear timing marks.
  3. CAUTION: Do not use camshaft gears, camshaft gear retaining bolts or timing belt to rotate crankshaft.
  4. Check that pointer is correctly aligned with index wire.

CAUTION: If pointer is not correctly aligned, carry out the following procedure.

  1. Loosen tensioner bolt until it is just possible to move the tensioner lever, using a 6 mm Allen key, rotate tensioner lever clockwise until pointer is just above the index wire then rotate the lever anti-clockwise until pointer is correctly aligned with index wire.
  2. Ensuring pointer maintains correct position, tighten tensioner bolt to 25 Nm.
  3. Using the crankshaft pulley bolt rotate crankshaft 2 turns clockwise and align camshaft gear timing marks.
  4. Check that the pointer is correctly aligned with index wire.
  5. Fit timing belt upper cover and seal, ensure seal is correctly positioned, fit bolts and tighten to 9 Nm.
  6. Fit closing panel and secure with screw and scrivets.
  7. Fit engine cover. See this section.
  8. Connect battery earth lead.
  9. Fit road wheel(s) and tighten nuts to correct torque. See INFORMATION, Torque wrench settings.
  10. Remove stand(s) and lower vehicle.
